Subsimmer surfaces again
Hello everyone, It has been a long while since I have posted and even longer since I participated regularly at the forum. I joined in 2002 when I was playing DC and SHII...stayed on through SHIII had the honour of being a brief part of the GWX beta team in 2007. Stayed for the debut of SHIV-while inauspicious it turned out to become a fine sim with the patches and mods just like SHIII did. One which though I bought soon after it came out I could not play as my computer was not up to snuff. I really could not play SHIII with all the mods and all the graphic options turned up either.
At the time I was still a student, a Canuck ex-pat originally from Vancouver who came to study international relations in Geneva - did an equivalent of a masters as a prerequisite into a PhD programme. got it, my second MA (had one from Canada before) and then got stuck in grad student mode for too long bored with the subject, the institute etc. and after spinning my wheels got a full-time job at a research foundation working on the web and publications department at the end of 2008. Interesting job and people, started a web relaunch project which should be completed by the end of the year . In between my job, busting my ankle and spending the first 4 months of 2009 in a cast (not skiing!) all sorts of personal developments-new hobbies (tango and boxing among other things) a social life and most recently moving apartments I have not thought about games and upgrading so much. Recently now settled in my new place I manged to find the time and the right system to upgrade and re-installed some of my games like Il-2 46 and for the first time since I bought it in 2007 SHIV (patched to 1.4). Woow. Blown away, by stock, can't wait to reload SHIII with GWX. ![]() Soooo now I am back, been lurking a bit, not much has changed here in the general forums I see. Can't promise I will spend as much time as before, got a full time job and a busy real life and participate in far too many forums. Still would like to dip back into the salty blue again so I have a few questions. Silent hunter III- Still alive, any movement in the mods or is it past its prime? Have all Atlantic u-boat fans moved on to SHIV uboats addon and SHV? ![]() Silent Hunter IV- The two main mods I remember are Trigger Maru and Real Fleet Boat? As I never tried them what are the main differences between the two? Is the uboat addon worth it even if uboats in the Indian Ocean are not appealing to me? What does 1.5 add otherwise and where can I get it and the mods? ![]() Silent hunter V - Gulp. Read some of the stuff here and at UBI. Ouch. ![]() |

Great to see you again! I was wondering where you'd been
![]() I'm not gonna get into the SH5 situation now, but one thing I'd like to add about SH4 is that it also has the wonderful (now finished) Operation Monsun mod, which started off as a Far East U-boat simulation only but now has turned into a full German all-theater campaign that easily rivals the best of SHIII! I highly recommend that, along with its' graphics/environment upgrade (OMEGU). |

Jeez. You explained everything so I can't even say "Where have you been?" I hate that!
![]() Honestly, Mr. A, it's good to see your name again. Quote:
![]() A great many folks still swear by SH3, and GWX isn't the only big supermod. There is a lot more to choose from, and new mods being done every day. There is a mod in the works that lets you walk all the way through a Type II. Quote:
TMO (Trigger Maru Overhauled) makes it a little harder, the purpose being that an exact recreation suffers from foreknowledge - if it's harder than real life then the player will have to act more realistically. Sounds odd, but it really does help. You should also get RSRD (Run Silent, Run Deep) if you're using RFB. It changes the campaign itself - ship movements and battles - to reflect the real thing. On the other hand, if you want to play in a Type II or a Type IX, or play in 1944, and don't mind a very limited supply of merchant types to shoot at (and in spite of claims that it is much more modable the modders are having a real uphill struggle with that and other problems), then SH3 and SH4 are your only choices.

Welcome back.
Every week there is a 'is it worth it' thread started and here is my two-penneth. I only have SH3 installed (obviously not stock!), SH4 is sitting on the shelf waiting for me to get bored with 3 and has been there for about six months with no signs of me dusting it off just yet - but (I've read) that the U-Boats mod is definately worth it. SH5 is now so cheap it'd be daft not to get it and see what it's like for yourself, as there are so many for and against it can be the only way! As for the supermods for all, you'd need to try them to find the one to your liking. In the words of Dr Pepper - Try it, you might like it! ![]() I look forward to your input in these forum when you get the chance. ![]()

Thanks guys. Well the truth is I'll never be as much into the games as I used to be-it is an enjoyable hobby-the key is a balanced life.
Yes the "personal developments" was a reference to a crazy lovelife or attempts at one over the past year and a half or so. Women are complicated and insane and we guys are no better so the result is nitro glycerine in a mixer! ![]() Another thing is getting a new computer especially after a long time is really like moving. When I moved back in June threw a lot of stuff out including stuff I realised I needed later. ![]() Hey just the fact I got a Swiss keyboard means I will have to go in and reassign keys for Il-2 as I could not find the airbrakes for my Stuka ![]() Thankfully the weather is not very nice today so should get most of my stuff up to speed. May even get some manual TDC practice in. Will have looots of questions be sure guys. May even participate in some political discussions. ![]() |
