Default I've been whistling a civil war tune for years.....

...and I didn't even know it.

Just a recent discovery I made about 20 minutes ago. When i was a kid, I used to watch Tex Avary cartoons, Such as this one:

(I highly doubt that cartoon is played on any TV network nowadays considering how "UnPC" it is now)
Now the "Southern Wolf" in those cartoons was always one of my favorites. I liked his laid back attitude. The song he whistles, is catchy.

I didn't know the lyrics, if there were any, but for some reason, at an early age, considering how much cartoons i watched on TV, that song just stuck with me. I've been whistling it for years, even today.
Come to find out, that song is called, "Kingdom Coming" or "The Year of Jubilo".

Written by abolitionist and union supporter Henry Clay Work.

Full song here. It almost sounds like a pro slavery tune, but you really have to pay attention to whats being said.

I would not be surprised if everyone else here knew that song but me.
And as Paul Harvey would say...... "and now you know, the rest of the story.". (well, *I* do now, at any rate)

Did you see the link in the side panel? Same song, live performance, damn good song.

Not exactly an authentic tune of the era, but it does capture it's essence. Probably why they used in on the Civil war TV series.

Have definitely heard this song, as well (just had to hear the first few strums on the opening riff to recognize it).

When my family used to vacation in The States when I was young(er), we'd cruise a lot of the Civil War battlefield sites. At some point we picked up a couple of audio cassettes that were both Union and Confederate songs for the lonnnnng trip down the interstate.

So, my man: memories, memories, memories....

I was familiar with 'Kingdom Coming' because of the old Cumberland Three Songs Of The Civil War album. It wasn't as good as the newer stuff, but back in 1960 it was all we had. Their version of the song was much sanitized, being apparently a soldier's version about going of to war. Fun version though, but there's no YouTube version. Sorry.

Would it be advisable to whistle "Yankee doodle" in the deep south, or is that just asking for trouble
