Default Anybody tried Formula 1 2010 PC?

I've been having a look at this of late and it certainly looks interesting. I was wondering if any of you guys have it yet, or have tried it? Is it any good?

My main concern is the required internet connection. I've heard that you need to be connected all the time or you are unable to save anything, even in Single Player. If this is true then I will NOT be buying this game. I'm only interested in single player, and my internet connection is not great at the best of times. This required internet connection thing with so many new games is BS.

Rant over- if you have it, I would be interested to know your thoughts on it.

I'll let you know after it gets fixed, the PC games got a list of bugs longer than Hockenheim's straights before the circuit change.

Codemasters is working on a patch but they've done an Ubi and released an unfinished game that still has its bugs. Haven't heard about always having to be online to race in SP though. From the few user reviews I've seen around the net multi is fun but single player needs refinement.

That's the unofficial bugs list topic at the codemasters forums, its 181 pages long and over 200k views so hopefully they're paying attention.

I have it and have been playing it. Definitely more game then sim, but the name is "F1 2010 - The Game". That said, I think if you tweak the FFB settings a bit it feels every bit as good as some of the rFactor F1 mods like FSONE or CDTP.

As for the bugs, there are definitely some there. Your lollipop man is extra cautious for example. If there is someone in a pit lane on any track that is on the same continent as you, then he will not release you. Seriously though, he will hold you when there are clear gaps and you will loose places if you pit with many other cars. I usually avoid it by minding the pit traffic.

There are alot of people saying that AI is not using fuel calculations while the player is. I think that is an overblown myth. If I run a full race with fuel sim on in a Lotus, I finish back 25% of the field, as a Lotus should. Turn it off and I can win in the same car. For alot of people this somehow proves the AI isn't using fuel.. don't ask me how they work that one out, but you will find alot of people claim it is so. The AI can have some freakish behavior but the game uses a "catchup" file like Dirt2. I think most of the "fuel bug" claims are down to weird behavior caused by that file. On PC however that file can be removed totally and I have found the racing better.

I have also seen alot of people say the AI won't pit. That must only happen on shorter races, I have done all of mine so far at 100% distance and they always pit, usually with a 2 stop strategy.

Tires seem to explode at odd times. Tire punctures are very frequent, especially if you drive it hard but it is much too sensitive. Take the curbs in the same way as a real F1 driver, or even the AI and you will almost certainly get a puncture. The odd thing is to prevent this you disable damage, not tire wear.. that seems to mean punctures are associated with the damage model, not tire model.. odd indeed.

It definitely need the patch they are working on, there are frustrating issues but don't believe everything you read about it on forums.

My short take, if you want online racing skip it. The online is made for kiddies that want to compare times on a leaderboard. rFactor is still far superior for online racing. If you want a game that is a 1 player RPG of an F1 driver, then once patched I think it will be enjoyable.

**Edit - I did forget to say... the tracks... freakin amazing!

Okay I'm revising my opinion after spending some time with it over the past couple of days. My brother decided to pick up a copy so after spending some time getting his racing wheel to work (Darn Logitech Momo, had to play with the axis controls a bit to get it to work) I've had a blast.

Its a fun game, I just haven't been expecting too much out of it which is probably a good thing because when I come across something nice I think to myself "that was pretty cool"

Just need to figure out tire selection on the fly for manual stops in the wet, and so I can switch back after the race dries up. The game will grow on me, I have no doubt of it so I'm hoping I can get a good couple of weeks out of it before I sink myself into The Force Unleashed 2.

Cheers for the info guys. From what you are all saying then, I can presume it's more of a game than a sim, though still enjoyable if you're an F1 fan, which I am. Then there's the bugs.. Groan, here we go again, this has become par for the course these days. Reckon I'll probably give it a few months to get patched up properly in that case as it certanly looks the part, and I do like my visuals!

Glad no-one's confirmed the 'being online' requirement....

I bought mine through Steam and I am always online anyways, I am not sure about the DVD version. It does use Games for Windows Live, and I sign into that as well (it is the same account as my Xbox) so again I don't know if it is absolutely required, because I haven't tried not doing it.

When the patch comes out I'll post back about how well they did squishing the bugs, but like all big company patches, I wouldn't expect it soon.
