Hi all,
Just started playing SHIV again after a long absence while I waited for some of these great mods to come out. Playing TMO 2.0 right now and loving it! Anyway, I was just wondering, I have had two patrols now where I sight convoys and do a contact report. Both times I receive a reply that there will be other assets sent to deal with the contact and I am told to disengage. If I choose instead to attack, will there be a loss of renown (or worse) waiting for me when I return to base? Or, if I attack and get a bunch of tonnage, will all be forgiven on my return? Thanks in advance! Dale |

Maintain radio silence at all costs, you'll thank me later. You should be able to offset any loss of, and/or possibly gain, renown by sinking some tonnage, preferably tankers. The brass will love you if you sink tankers. The only time I radio anything to HQ is when it's absolutely, positively, necessary. Like spotting a TF when part of your original orders include radioing any contacts, but that's it.

You get more renown from tonnage then from following orders. So you don't have to listen to them if you don't want to.

Loose lips sink ships....in this case yours. Don't worry, you suffer no loss at all, you get no points for reporting a contact and you won't lose any by not listening to those messages.
However, I've never even seen a message saying not to engage when you have torps. Maybe that's some of the added messages of TMO 2. I would hate to think Ducimas set up a patrol that tells you do disengage a smaller target because a large TF is coming through later...Surely he wouldn't do that..99.9% sure he didn't... ![]() Someone needs to mod you get points for reporting convoys, more for TF. A few reports from subs probably saved the day. |

As to topic, you don't HAVE to follow mission orders. All you HAVE to do is earn enough renown for the patrol to be considered successful. How you earn that renown is up to you. You could complete mission after mission if traffic is low, or not. Personally, if its the patrol for X days, ill do it, and if i sink enough, i'll not radio in, and go back to port when im good and ready. If im not seeing enough, ill report in and see about a new mission, which I may or may not do. If it's doable, i do it. If its not, then i poke around the general area for something to sink. |

Yup, I was full up on torps on both patrols when I received these messages.
I guess my follow up question would be, if I actually followed these convoys would I eventually see the so called "other assets" attack? Or is that just a radio message for reality sake? It would be worth it to watch these convoys get hit by either planes or other subs! Dale |

How do I "not" radio in? I find I get radio messages randomly and assume that the game is communicating for me especially when I'm surfaced. I have no idea how I would send a radio message on purpose (?)

You send status reports, don't have the game up, but at the screen where you check your messages you have two icons, one to update status and one to report convoys or TF that you see. Should be the first tab on the clipboard. If you complete a patrol you can click the status icon and you'll usually get another patrol

I haven't tried it, but I always thought that your current patrol wasn't considered over until you stayed the required time within a close proximity to the assigned spot.
I always did it, and then went hunting. Oh, there's so much more to explore all the time. I really want to get into Tokyo Harbor! Anybody tried that? Mines? Anyway, be more aggressive ![]()

I guess most of us try Tokyo Harbor at least once...It depends on mods. Run TMO alone, don't go there in the daytime, planes will see you in the shallow water and TMO planes can hit you deep. Still, just your basic ships, nothing special. If you just want to rape ports, Truk or Osaka would be better choices. |
