Default Elite Dangerous

As a player of the famous original elite space trader game, I was interested in this brand new super dooper version. Its mainly for online but can be played offline single person which is my way of playing anything. The price is a bit prohibitive £40; so I am going to wait a year or so. £40 is a lot to pay for something untried, or maybe too 'hard' ?

Anyone here got it?

My joystick wont work with controls.

Complex controls/high fidelity/detailisation and pseudo reaslism in a WW1 style dog fighting game.

Can't say that I approve.

I have to disagree with Ikalugin, a little.

The controls itself are absolutely fine and make sense. Pseudo-realism is spot on though but it is definitely fun to fly and fight.

Elite however, has severe problems.
While it looks flashy and shiny and sounds bombastic (best sound design I heard in a game besides Alien: Isolation), it is all "fake".
Nothing in Elite really works or is convincing. In the beginning you won't notice because you are under shock & awe and rightly so. But once the visuals don't blind you anymore, you start to see all the logical fallacies the game commits and how "gamey" it is.

I'd never call that thing a simulation.
It also doesn't help that all things you do in game are in the end a grind-fest and get boring really quick. It also doesn't matter where you are in this gigantic and really awesome galaxy. Why? Because everything is the same no matter where you are.

Same ships (and just a hand full!)
Same stations
Same NPCs
Same Names
Same stupid behavior that doesn't make sense nor entertains
Same missions
Same irrelevant "factions"
Same everything.

I said it a thousand times in the Elite forum and I say it again here at Subsim.

Everything in Elite is a copy of a copy of a copy.

Also, it isn't really offline!
You have to be always online(!) even in single player (duh).
They said it would be offline but shortly before release they let the bomb blow and let all players know "hey, regarding offline? uh screw that lololol!".
It turned many people away, rightly so.
The performance is also lackluster, the game stutters a lot, even NPCs rubberband and overall there are many network related problems since the beginning. FPS wise, it runs fine and smooth for me - but that doesn't matter when you have internet-related issues.

My final advice: Stay away, keep an eye on it.
Elite is released already - but still a beta in many, many regards and a lot of players are really pissed off by now, I am one of them. I lost hope for Elite, but who knows what happens in the future, since 1-3 DLC are planned etc.

I haven't had any performance issues nor control issues (using TrackIR + Saitek X52), but otherwise I agree with what Nippelspanner said. Once the first few hours of "ooooh, aaah" wear off, the game is just copy & paste.

Under it's pretty face, it lacks soul, life. It just is in it's own huge, yet sterile glass jar.

The reason, especially in online mode is the huge galaxy. It's way too big for the number of players. What I liked about playing Freelancer online was the fact that you could run into another player at the end of any jumplane, there was always a risk for wandering off the safe areas. In E, once you wander off of the safe sectors, you are lucky if you see another player once in 2 hours.

No control issues or performance issues at all. Locked at 60fps at 1080p (just because unlocked it runs at 200+fps and gets the GPU pretty warm) also using X55 controller, have enough buttons they I don't have to touch the keyboard at all.

I agree with Dowly. But I'm still playing and having fun. I like doing the exploring, the new powerplay stuff, ship outfitting, and trading. Does the galaxy feel a bit hollow? yes at times. Does it get repetitive at times, yes, but so did the other elites.

The big thing I think people I've talked to had a problem is a lack of guidance, and knowledge. There is nothing to help new players out, or help players with key concepts of the game. Your just handed a ship and told off you go. There is a lot of forum reading, and website reading to learn how to do stuff.

I loved it at first but I'm done with it now. Such a marvellous, unparalleled sandbox they have created, so thick with possibility, all those stars and worlds and black holes and nebula.....So much possibility, so little imagination put into what to do with it all.

It's worth noting that a lot of the stuff that was promised just seems to get pushed further and further away to make room for things like combat arenas, dreadful 'go here and pick this up them go there' type missions and the Powerplay rubbish. As for the lack of the offline mode...well, the other thread has my feelings on that, suffice to say I don't believe they ever had any actual intention of including an offline mode.

If they pull out something really special, I'll have another look, but I don't think they will. I'll wait for No Mans Sky and see how that turns out.

Sounds similar with Ubisoft programmes. Great ideas, great graphics and good story lines but zero for testing, riddled with bugs. Every Ubisoft game I have has been the same.

Actually, bugs or poor testing are two things I can't really complain about with Elite. Not that there haven't been bugs, but the ones that have appeared were usually dealt with in a timely manner.

Early on, for example, there was a lot of weirdness with the trading system, but that seemed to mostly have been Frontier screwing around with it for testing purposes, and although you can complain that some of the design decisions have been lousy, they at least work the way Frontier intended them too.
