I've been having a horrendously annoying problem with SH4 lately. It's completely stable in campaign mode as far as I can tell, but I am finding it impossible to play multiplayer. Every time I join a game, I crash to the desktop with the generic Windows error message. Every time my friend joins my game, the same thing happens to him. Although we can play the 'versus' game-mode (attacking a convoy controlled by the other player) for about 15 minutes without a crash, this too CTDs with perfect regularity.
I am using an unmodded SH4/U-boat pack retail disk install, so this all refers to version 1.5. I use a few minor mods (fewer radio contacts and green-while-activated HUD buttons, although this one doesn't work) but restore the original files with the mod manager for multiplayer games. My friend is also playing with an unmodded 1.5/U-Boat Pack, although he bought the game on Steam. Both of our computers blow the system requirements "out of the water," so to speak. No matter whether we are playing a randomly-generated mission or one of the built-in scenarios, the non-host's game CTDs every single time we try COOP. The host loads normally, while the client appears to; the view starts in the control room, but the game crashes within a second of loading the mission. For some reason Adversarial missions work well for a short period, but also invariably crash after 10-15 minutes. We don't really understand how convoy control works, anyway. In both cases, the generic Windows error message appears. Note that we're just playing 'standard' LAN games: this isn't an issue with the Ubi servers or Hamachi. I've seen a few threads on this issue posted before, but the OPs aren't particularly descriptive and there haven't really been any conclusive solutions. I've noticed that some people experience something similar when using random maps, but this occurs for us even if we use an included scenario. What do you guys think is causing this? How would you recommend attempting to fix it? Thanks! |
