As my computer gets older (will be 5 years in March since I built it), I am starting to think of a new one. Since I'm not much into games anymore and I'm not too interested in building one I started browsing around. I went to WalMart's site and saw the All-In-One category. I didn't know what that was and checked them out. I was surprised. I actually like the concept. I guess the risk wouldn't be much different than from, say, a laptop. If the display goes up I guess you are hosed like if you had a laptop. You don't have to deal with battery packs. If the parts are changeable like a traditional desktop then there is another plus. I love the idea of the space saved! I have no room on my desk right now. What is everyone's thoughts on All-In-Ones?

OK - the pro's are... Its cheap.
The con's are ... Its cheap. Basically you have an underpowered laptop in a bigger case for alot less money than your average portable. The specs on the one I found (searched because I had never heard of it before) are below even a basic desktop. Literally - if all your going to do is chat and pay bills - get a netbook for the same cost. If your going to ever do any gaming whatsoever - then avoid this "All in One" at all costs.

Stay away from them!! The biggest problem is the integrated video, lack of slots and generally very poor chipsets!

Thanks guys.
![]() ![]() I don't like netbooks at all. They are way too small and don't even have a disc drive. They look cool, but are just too small. My 1280x1024 LCD monitor just bit the dust (only 3 year old Samsung ![]() Other than integrated video, the specs on these things seemed ok. Or I thought they did. I haven't really followed computer hardware since I built mine. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Fair to say that I am no fan of the all in one PC's.

I'd avoid buying complete system as a package. Cost too much considering what you're getting.
Always always build your own. ![]()

I looked at them a little when doing research for a new system. I agree that they look kind of cool, and "Super-Laptop" sounds neat, but after a little digging and reading the comments here, it looks like you end up with:
1. A desktop that doesn't do much but looks cool. 2. A laptop that doesn't do much and is too big to fit on your lap. ![]()

Better to just get a small case and a mATX board with everything on-board. If the graphics-chip dies, you can use an add-in card in the PCI-E slot as replacement. Same for sound or LAN; just put in a card. Also leaves you free to do an upgrade in the future should you want to (better graphics, better sound, etc).
Leaves some room for customization. Honestly doubt you can easily upgrade any part easily in one of those, even just swapping a harddrive might be a headache. ![]() * should save a bundle as well.
