a cool idea....

today i played the game red faction, an average game, but one thing that stands out about it is the damage system, and vehicles. the first vehcle you get to pilo is a midget submarine, and i must tell you, it IS AWSOME!!!

now, onto the sient hunter 3 stuff. how cool do you think sailing a seehund submarine would be? imagine dodging sonar pings and depth charges, as you launch your only 2 torpedos at that big, humongous battleship.

now about the limited amount of u-boats, the good ting about the seehunds is that they appeard in 1944, when ii type u-boats where absolutely obsolete, except possibly (havnt checked) in the black sea, in which you wouldnt see any seehunds anyway. if this was packaged as a mod, if you where playing black sea campaign, you would still have normal boats, and if you where in the atlantic, and thinking of giving up that ii for the sea wolf, you could.

so, any thoughts or anything?

Do you mean this little guy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seehund

I can see some possibilities for single missions. The Wiki entry doesn't go into any great detail about their successful missions (8 ships sunk, 3 more damaged over 145 sorties, for 35 Seehund lost). I bet someone here knows hella more about these.

EDIT: looks like it would be fun to drive.

yep, thats the one, but because of the short range, you would have to include a ship that drops you off near the english channel or whatever.they had a range of 500km up top, so, that isnt tooo bad, and they had both diesal and electric engines

A nice looking little sub indeed

Actually they DO look pretty good, however their design and limitations would probably not have been favourable in large open stretches of water like the Atlantic, ideally they could have been used to operate in smaller shallower areas like the Celtic/& Irish Sea or St George's Channel for example,or even to make sorties up and down the Thames?
To operate in open sea they would as you (Jankowski) said probably have needed to be transported to their zone and the same upon return.
They could also have made excellent reconnaissance subs? due to their VERY small size and weight.
An interesting little sub nonetheless

i just hit a brick wall. how are you ment to fire the torpedos? sh3 works on torpedo tubes, not outside torpedos, so if you fire them, thy will still be there. how annoying!

i guess one could render them invisible when fired?
maybe the 'torpedoes' could be part of the boat, then when 'fired' they can be changed to 'nothing' by being tied to a damage state, much like how certain parts of the boats change when damaged, like the guns.

well, how about career starts?
I have an idea for that

get someone who knows a thing or two about home ports to make a couple home ports in a specified drop off point, make like 10 or 15 of these ports, that would shift in a reasonable amount of time (like, when flotillas change ports)
then, use SH3 Commander to select that port and have only the seehund be selectable.

for missions, the seehund captain can do what he's assigned to do, then when he's completed what he can do, he can simply set course for a safe point and exit the mission when he reaches it, implying he radioed and was picked up by a U-boat

The fireing of the torps and makeing them disappear is kind of easy.
You need to re-work the torpedo door animations.
This was figured out awhile back.
I even told keltos how to do it for the Biber mod never finished.

OOOOOOH....sounds like a a suicide mission in the making to me.

But...I've long maintained that a kamikaze career (in the WWII era world) was possibily an ideal career choice..

1.Required minimal training...
2.Lots of glory and superb perks from idolizing countrymen(and women)
3...and you only had to go to work once.

Jankowski, I'd be happy to help test this thing out when you get it working.

ok, i havnt started working on it yet, but it could possibly become my first 3d model actually completed. maybe i could ask that guy who is working on putting the surcoaf into the game for help. yes, i might be able to connect the amount of torpedos with those fired. would require some programming. but for now, what 3d program should i use to mke it?
