Salvo Attack

Does anyone ever use the salvo setting in the TDC in GWX? I'm guessing it just fires all the selected tubes at the exact same time, but with each torpedo keeping it's settings?

I fire salvos all the time, usually 2 at a time.

The torpedoes do not fire simultaneously, but rather one after another.

All torpedoes will have the same settings (depth, fuse, speed), except for course, which is determined by the spread angle setting.

I never use it, bad tonnage/torpedo ratio.

Hardly ever.
Prefer to shoot my eels individually.

I find individual firing much more 'personal, but if you prefer the salvo be sure to make your adjustments to each eel individually before commencing the firing sequence.

I don't use it because in real life they were fired a minimum of eight seconds apart. If the game did that, I would use it.

I'll use the salvo from time to time. Mostly when attacking convoys from the outside. I generaly use it when coming in from the side of the convoy on a shalow runing depth in hopes of hiting the most ships. This is generaly a tactic of last resort for me. Used when the risk of geting in close is too high due to dense escort screen or if I have been found out, I'll kick all the eels out the fron whip the boat around and let fly the stern tube and then dive for the crush. Some times I get lucky and others I miss all the ships in the convoy, still it is better than nothing.

That's a good/valid point I'd overlooked Steve

I use it because it seems like 75% of the time it takes 2 torpedoes to sink anything in GWX. Every once in a while you get a one-shot kill (got one last night - sank a large merchant, of all things, with one torpedo when the 2nd was a dud), but most of the time either they don't sink or it takes hours for them to sink from one shot.

Prior to 1941 it's safe to shoot one eel, because if that doesn't work you can surface and use your gun. But after 1941 the merchants are armed and it's not safe. So I've pretty much resolved to 2 torpedoes per ship.

In a convoy attack, you may only get one attack on the convoy and sunk ships are better than damaged ones, so, again, I give each ship 2 torpedoes to make sure that what I'm shooting at sinks.

I sometimes use salvos, either against a vessel of say 10.000 tonnes and above,or against the flank of a convoy.
If I opt for a salvo shot (for whatever reason I feel it neccessary) it will only ever be done at short ranges anyway,I very rarely if EVER attack at long distance.

NOTE - Salvos can be very effective at close ranges, and if you get the spread angle just right you can 'kill' a ship quickly and efficiently by striking vulnerable points practically instantaneously.

I forgot to mention,is it possible then to set different depths for each torpedo in the salvo? (sorry if this has already been mentioned,I feel lazy at the moment and scouring 100s of posts just to find info on this is not what I fancy doing right now),as this could be useful against a convoy where a ship is obscuring your line of sight to another ship in an adjacent column, allowing you to attack both at the same time as torpedoes intended for the ship in say column 1 can pass under the ship in column 2.
If so,this would be very useful, and highly satisfying!.
The main reason I ask this is because the bulk of my attacks are against single ships, major attacks on large convoys are quite rare for me and therefore my 'convoy tactics' are not what you might call 'polished' ...for now.
I yearn to ravage a large convoy very soon!

Interesting idea Paul. That could well work
I'm pretty sure you can. If you set the depths of your eels individually before switching on the salvo button.

I might not see you but I can still sink you!

I will try this in the convoy attack of the training academy later,if I can line myself up nicely so that my view of a ship in the furthest columns is somewhat obscured by a ship in the nearest?...I have a feeling this may work
Would be great against those tankers that like to hide in the centre columns of a convoy, its either that or go for the bold and suicidal (unless you are confident that is,and it is still early war!) approach of attacking from within!
