Default Patch 1.4 won't install - CTD

Hi all. I'm brand new to Silent Hunter and sub sims in general. I bought Silent Hunter 4 off www.direct2drive.com and installed it. It ran fine, as version 1.0. So I got the 4 updates from the ubisoft website and installed them. Versions 1.1 thru 1.3 install fine and the game runs fine. But when I try to install 1.4 it crashes out before it even gets to the first install screen. Any ideas? It's Windows Vista 32 bit.

That is definitely something we can help you with. Don't be afraid to ask specific questions, or general ones. There is nothing we love more here than to see someone asking questions, and a year later be one of the people answering them.

Thanks Steve. The first thing I've realized is that the "Submarine School" in the game stinks. Where's the training? I've figured out the first 3 "lessons" and got through them fine. Now I'm trying to do the last one where you have to sneak past the escorts and sink the merchants.

The biggest problems I'm having so far is figuring out what direction I'm going in, what direction other ships are going in, where they are in relation to me, and how to target them if I don't have the periscope up? I did find a "noob" video here on the forum that helped a little but it's still confusing to me.

Unfortunately I'm a lazy old bum who still uses auto targeting, so I can't help there. As for doing it without the periscope, that never worked in real life, so any help you get will be kind-of faking it.

But help will arrive shortly, of that I'm sure.

Check this thread for the Sonar only video, should help.

And whilst it was trained for pre-war, it was found to be too dificult to use in practice. In SH4 though, you have very little of the problems of real problems, as the sound travels instantaneously, so there is no sonar lag. You also only get one ping off a target, so range is easy too.

Welcome to the boat mate
There is a ton of information in this thread.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=146795

Some of it won't make much scents till you get some experience but it will come.

I wouldn't worry too much about the fourth training mission, you start out in such a bad position it's all but impossible to complete. It's more a DD evasion mission than a sink ships thing.

Best thing for training is the single war patrols like hellcat, got radar and a better boat. Don't worry about the mission just go to the Luzon Strait, find some targets, save the game as soon as you do and replay it till you get a good handle on how things work.

Got questions? We got answers. Ask away.

Thanks guys. I didn't even mean that I couldn't figure out how to find and target the ships in the periscope. I meant I couldn't figure out how the find the ships period. At the start of the training mission you're supposed to submerge and follow the convoy NE. But by the time I submerge, rig for silent running, and get underway heading NE, the convoy is gone and my sonar can't find them and I can't use radar submerged.

I think I'm just going to skip the last training mission and play some of the solo missions before I get into career mode. Any recommendations of which missions would be good for a new sub skipper?
