The easy way is to use timetraveler's SH3 crush depth tool. I have uploaded it here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WOII8CYF
Here is the readme
Quote:
SH3 Crush Depth V2 V2 - A program to change sub crush depths in Silent Hunter III.

//////////////////////by timetraveller

-----------
THE PROGRAM
-----------
SH3 Crush Depth V2 is a GUI program interface for changing the submarine crush
depths for Silent Hunter III.

SH3 Crush Depth V2 is freeware, and is not to be sold. Feel free to host the zip
file on your site if you wish. As a courtesy, send me an e-mail and let me know
you are hosting it. Current e-mail: timetraveller@bellsouth.net.

I assume no responsibility if you mess up your game files by using this program.
The program will make a copy of each file the first time it changes it.

That said, I hope you have fun with it.

---------------
V2 ENHANCEMENTS
---------------
1. Better crush depth randomizer routine. It can now randomize down to 1 meter
accuracy instead of 10 meters.

2. Sub surface draft, and maxmium and minimum ranges at speeds for both surfaced
and submerged can be set.

-------
CREDITS
-------
The discovery of how to mod crush depth: mearle. Sharp eye, dude!

Thanks to Oesten for compiling the maximum crush depths for each sub type from
web sources.

-----------------------------
INSTALLING SH3 CRUSH DEPTH V2
-----------------------------
Unzip the downloaded file and click on the setup.exe to install SH3 Crush Depth V2.
Install may be done over top any pre-existing SH3 Crush Depth V2 installation. If
newer versions come out, this is what to do.

SH3 Crush Depth V2 is written in Visual Basic 6 and should run on most modern
systems from Windows 98 on. You will need at least the Microsoft VB6 SP5 runtime
files installed (which you probably already have). Turn off your anti-virus for
the install. As always, be sure to virus check any file beforehand.

SH3 uses the Visual Basic FILESYSTEMOBJECT for some file I/O. You must have the
Windows Scripting Host installed to successfully use this program. Some
anti-virus programs give false positives with certain Visual Basic objects, like
this one. Just so you know.

SH3 Crush Depth V2 makes no modifications to your existing SH3 installation or its
registry items.

UPDATES FOR BUILDS
------------------
None yet.

----------
SUB IMAGES
----------
If you wish, you can have your own individual sub images displayed for each
sub type. Pay careful attention to the "name yours:" filename when you click on
each sub type. Create an image sized 229W x 129H in the jpeg (.jpg) format with
that name and place it in the application folder.

---------------
GETTING STARTED
---------------
Start SH3 Crush Depth V2. Selected current default game values, including
crush depth, will be displayed.

For each sub, you should also open the sub's config (.CFG) file and change the
MaxDepth=300;meters field to read MaxDepth=500;meters and resave the file. 500
meters is the deepest you can ATTEMPT to dive. Word is you will probably get
stuck on the bottom if you go this deep. You can make this change right from
the program, as explained in the next paragraph.

First thing, open the sub's config (.CFG) file by clicking the OPEN SUB CFG as
TEXT FILE. Change the MaxDepth=300;meters field to read MaxDepth=500;meters and
resave the file.

-------------------
SETTING CRUSH DEPTH
-------------------
Max crush depth is limited by sub type, in order to attain the most realism.
After all, we don't want a Type IIA diving to 400 meters.

These are the maximum depths, by type:

Type IIA: 175 m
Type IID: 200 m
Type VIIB: 250 m
Type VIIC: 300 m
Type VIIC/41: 350 m
Type VIIC/42: 450 m
Type IX (all variants): 275 m
Type XXI: 350 m

Choose a new crush depth by typing its value in the box. If you wish to
randomize -20% +5% or -10% +5% around this new value, check one of the RANDOMIZE
radio buttons.

If you are satisfied with the new depth choice, click the SAVE NEW CRUSH DEPTH
button. The sub's .ZON file will be updated.

If you have saved a random crush depth value and want the value revealed, click
the little ? button. The crush depths, in all cases, are approximate.
Randomizing -20% +5% or -10% +5% allow the crush figure to go up to 10% to 20%
less than the selected depth (closer to the surface), or 5% more than the
selected depth (deeper).

---------------------------------
ABOUT THE CRUSH DEPTH CALCULATION
---------------------------------
The crush depth numbers given in this program are close to the actual depths
your sub's hull will crush at in the game. HOWEVER, they are not 100% accurate
and are effected by many factors. If you should calculate the floating point hex
value to a decimal equivalent you will find the number is approximately 1.4
times the shown decimal crush value. This is the value the game uses.

--------------
OTHER SETTINGS
--------------
Sub surface draft, and maxmium and minimum ranges at speeds for both surfaced
and submerged can be set. Type the new values in the boxes and save.

Running decks awashed. Increase the surface draft slightly until you get the
right effect. Periscope depth is 12 meters. You cannot set the surface draft
greater than that.
