Wagh....

Was up till 4 am, had 100000 tonnes to my name BEFORE I encountered the 50+ convoy in the Java Sea...put a large hole in that and was heading back to port.

Saved the game...on Nav map, paused etc.....try to load this morning. CTD Every single time.

Default Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh sh*

Is it the save game file corrupt or the game? Can you load the game but it crashed on loading the save, or did the game crash before loading?

Man, that's like having the biggest fish on the hook, seeing it, and then the line breaks. Grrrr

Luckily, I've never had this happen in Silent Hunter, any version. I have had problems with mod conflicts, but never this.

I feel your pain.

Something similar happened to me this weekend. I was even keeping two seperate saves and both end with a ctd after loading.

Chubster and everyone else. Sounds like you have your game icon hooked up to gu.exe. That's game update, by the way. There never were and will never be any game updates to get. Furthermore, gu.exe is fatally flawed and destroys your ability to reload save game files.

Right-click your Wolves of the Pacific desktop icon. Choose properties.

Now under target: you'll see that it ends with gu.exe. Change that as the dialog box above to read SH4.exe. Click OK. Done! Over 99% of your problems are instantly gone.

I've had problems with reloading saves only when it's my own fault.

Cheers RR but nope....mine points to SH4.exe. Personally I think SH4 cannot handle large save files.

I have been out since the start and although I have saved several times...with new names....they build up.

Luckily the save just prior to meeting the java convoy does load so will just have to destroy them again...

yea, I rarely save if in contact with convoys, just too much for SH 4 sometimes.I have done it and USUALLY it loads fine but have had corrupted saves before bc were many Japanese around when I saved, it happens.

Heck, I've saved in all kinds of situations, including with a torpedo in the water on the way to a target and no problems! I've TRIED to break it and have had very little success if any at all. I've saved submerged, on the surface, in a crowd, alone on the ocean, facing Mecca, not facing Mecca, with my fingers crossed, every way possible and the only way I can have trouble is to change mods between when I save and when I try to reload.

I think the jury is still out on why a select few are having problems. I don't think anyone has a decent handle on it at all because either you have the problems or you don't and there doesn't seem to be any common ground between people with the problems. I'll bet it's not random chance but it sure looks that way.

I think it's highly dangerous saving with contacts near. I haven't had a crash in some while and stopped saving near anything. Seems the only problems I have is if I alt tab out a lot of save over an existing file. Be even more dangerous if you have 2g of ram or less.

I do think the crashes depend on the system more than the game, not that anyone is doing something wrong, just some issues in system setups, hardware, software, drivers, ect...as RR said some never have an issue and some do. Frankly, I don't think it's possible to put a finger on it.

Default 50 plus convoy

where was that convoy? Java Sea? Do you have the date on your contact? I think a trip there around that time is in order.

Never mind the crash where the he** are the ships

Armistead could be onto it, depending on system configurations, background stuff, how big the save file along with how much memory is available might be the issue. Just reaching for straws
