Default general observation

While I was on shore leave for several months SH5 hit the market. Apparently, many SH4 forum members for moved to SH5. The volume of new posts is down and many of the major contributors are not here. I feel like it is only a few new Captains and some of the Old Guard standing between folks back home and the ever expanding Japanese Empire.

Perhaps we can get the last of the surviving crew members from the USS Barb, which blew up a locomotive on the Japanese mainland in '44, to take on a final, daring mission, sail to the SH5 forum, blow up its communication equipment, and bring down the site?

My Boat, the SS Barbarinna (i.e. the "little Barb"), looking for SH4 captains:

Nah, we're a friendly bunch.

But there is a possibility Ubi will blow up the project on her own!

note to self: don't goet into a DRM discussion again

Even if SH V was the best game ever created i still wouldnt buy it.

I could say it was because of the draconian DRM scheme, but i wont.

I'm withh you IGD, I enjoy "bringing the sunset to th rising sun"..and with the UBM and OM addons, one has the option of both theatres of conflict.

I'll probably try SH5 sometime; when the subsim modders make it more enjoyable then it was on release.

If you're looking for SH4 multiplayer partners, that has never been popular, even a couple of years ago. I don't really know why, other than the single player aspect is so good.

I've noticed a whole bunch of new players around here and it's heartening. It looks like the failure of SH5 has caused many looking for a good sub simulator to take a good look at SH4. They won't be disappointed here.

I predict no more patches or updates for SH5. Ubi will not even talk about SH5 in the future. At some point they will, probably without announcement, shut off the servers and all those SH5 DVDs will just be bad drink coasters with a hole in the middle. I think it's dead, Jim. (as Bones would say to Captain Kirk)

However, Silent Hunter 4 stands triumphant, showing that Ubi was capable of producing something much better, but chose not to. SH4 is not without defects, but it plays magnificently!

If you get just the right grip on the SH5 DVD,
Then flick it just right?
It sails pretty far!

I know a Guy that uses it in that Frisbie Golf thing.

Your post reminds of situations where a new manager takes over a department. Although he may not be suited for the job, the owners of the company may not come to grips with that fact for a long time. Therein lies the rub. Former SH4 Captains may drift back to the forum, but it could be slowly and may take a long time. Plus, those new to the game are only purchasing SH5 in many cases. In the meantime, our forum has lost some great talent. Will it recover its former glory? My head tells me, "No," but my heart holds a slim hope that is could.

Plus, the action in the forum was as good as the game!

Nor me. As a WW2 researcher by hobby, I know what 'our side' went through, and even by simulation, am never going to sink 'my own'. Staying in the Pacific thanks.

I'm so glad you didn't.

Since this is the SH4 forum I don't think anybody's going to get too worked up about it. I will buy SH5 as soon as it shrugs off its chains. I love submarines, period. I played AOD, and I played SH1. SH2 was fun for multiplayer, but not much else. I play SH3 modded all to (insert netherworld of your choice here). I play SH4 U-boats. I'll play the fleet boats too, if I ever get there. You see, I have this anal fixation about multiple careers all in a nice neat row, so I'll keep playing in the Atlantic until I get to 1941, and since I also have the bad habit of restarting for cool new mods that might not happen in this lifetime.

I too have high hopes for SH5, but until the DRM is gone I won't know if I'll like it or not. I just wish SH4 had the names functions given by SH3 Commander. I have a thing about ship names.

I'm not buying a game that forces you to be online in order to use it.

Said I didn't want to get into whole SH5-DRM mix since I'd already boned a copy from ebay way less than market rate (any rate is toomuch, I hear ya); but ah never gave up on SH4...and now four daze of moddin' SH4 all I can say is: wish I knew then what I know now! SH4 (Uboats/mods) is baaad! SH5 can't touch it! Play SH5, for what? SH4 offers all that and more...and no-D-R-friggin' M. Yeah, I said it!

ps-Know anybody want a slightly used sub sim?

Default Like a good book

Relax. SH4 and yes, SH3 are like a great book. You never toss em. They stay on the shelf and you value them more each time you take em down.

You'll read other books. (play other games) Then you pick up the old fave and revisit like an old friend.

They'll all be back.

I started SH4 without a clue about submarine warfare and only took up manual targeting after RR gave me a medal for hiting a target aimed at when in auto targeting mode. I was quite proud of that achievement, if that is what you could call it, until I realized all the guffaws I heard were from battle hardened veterans snickering about an incompetent new captain. Chagrined, I read all the tutorials, studied the videos, and with the advent of the Easy Aob mod, joined the ranks of the few, the proud, the crazy and the addicted (captains, that is!). Then I had the misfortune of getting hooked on TMO1.9. Other than the graphics, what can be better (i.e. more terrible)? And when I saw the screen shots of a boat in SH5 cruising amidst the sunbathers on shore and heading ((i.e., proceeding) directly into into a forest I had seen enough. SH5 has more than just a few kinks to work out. As the French would say, "Oh, la, la, monsieur Cap-e-tan!." Call me old fashioned, but SH5 ain't no Apple I Phone. I like it right here--amongst my brothers -- the few, the proud, the insane, the heroes.
