Renown is not 'script'

Renown is not 'script' (money). It is recognition. Recognition brings reward. A U-boat Kaleun who gains recognition for meritorious service is rewarded accordingly. He does not 'buy' anything from the "sub store". (Yes, I'd like to buy a new hydrophone. How much is that? Do you take MC, Visa or Amex? I'd also like what is behind Curtain Number 3!)

Renown sentence examples:

* UK Tafe Tractors renowned for being basic, simple and reliable.
* We've got the world renowned National Park Coastal Path on the very Western tip of Europe right on our doorstep.
* This same year ( 1687 ) he took Holy orders and soon earned renown as a preacher in London.
* In the 1950s New York City Ballet began touring and gained worldwide renown.
* Our Research and Development Unit for English Studies has achieved world renown for its work in corpus linguistics.
* It has now got a world-wide renown and that is something " .

The sim uses the 'mechanism' of "renown" to pass 'reward' (select reward and limited rewards) to the Kaleun for what he 'earned'. If anything he is given upgrades based on the level of renown he has accumulated. I would hate to see people coming into the sim, not understanding history, or language, actually thinking these folks bought stuff before they went on patrol!!

yes except that you get promoted to Kapitan Leutnant (yay finally made "KaLeun") and use your renown (reputation/political leverage/somesuch) to be awarded a brand spanking new boat with all the hottest gizmos. And you're demoted to Leutnant zur See. The system is flawed so you might as well see it as 'buying' into new stuff. In real life, you would have been given the latest RWR and typeV torpedoes anyway, if you were a good skipper. In the game, those things are subtracted from renown which means you're forever stuck around 1000 points from 1942 onward. (well, I am, anyway)

Yep, the 'renown program code' is poor to be sure as it favors arcade players. I have always wondered if there could be an add-on to Commander or a renown utility. I wish I knew how to program (no I don't

). Anyway my view is not endorsed by the sim owners or Spongebob Squarepants. I just would like to say 'money does not exchange hands' to get upgrades!

A Kaleun walks into the showroom, Jimbuna's music wafting in the air.

"Yes, can I help you sir?"

"I'm looking for a new hydrophone, something with lots of new dials and whammies"

"Yes sir, we have a new model, you will be de-lighted!"

"How much is that? The Kaleun pulls out a fat wad of Monoploy money from a Parker Brothers game"

The salesman grabs the money, adjusts his eye glasses on his nose.

"Your change sir! We can have that delivered and installed this evening."

The Kaleun spots a shiny new engine workmen are wheeling into the show room.

"Say! that is a sweet hummer!! I am going to be out on patrol for 40-50 days. I'd like to put down a payment for lay-away"

"Sorry sir, that model is first come, first served."

"No problem, I can be back in just 20 days if I have to."
