Default Watching them sink

Hi folks,
after reading a recent post in which the poster referred to staying with the damaged ship untill it sunk to get the credit, I was wondering if this is right, because I have left crippled ships that were on fire and slowed, but still going and I have been out of torpedoes and returned to base and assumed, that if it sank it would be before I docked and would appear on the nav map as a sunk ship. Now so far this hasn't happened and I just thought it had managed to limp home or received help, but if you need to be in the vicinity then when its safe I'll shadow the ship for a few hours and see what happens.

Thanks Bert

You need to stay within 30km of the ship until it has sunk.
Outside the 30km radius the ship is not rendered by the engine and therefor can never sink, you wouldnt get any renown for it.

Ah, how well I remember putting my last 2 torpedoes (from a Type IIA) into a target, then babysitting it for 2 days (off Hatlepool), before making off with all my dissappointment.

The frustrating feeling you get when you're down to 50 bullets in the flak, is a nice one.

Once you've received the "She's going down" message you can be sure you'll get your renown for the kill.

I think you need to be within about 50 km (?) in the vicinity of the damaged ship to get credit for it if/when it sinks. I can't remember if you still get credit for it if it gets sunk in a storm after you damage it.

Whatever drains the final damage point (in this case the weather) is given the credit.

I think I'll hang about a bit longer next time I'm in that situation, on two occasions in my present career (different patrols) I have used my last torpedoes and have badly damaged ships,C2 and a small tanker both had slowed dramatically and burning and the C2 was heavily listing and then I have turned to go back to base and nothing showed up on the nav map as sunk. Maybe next time I'll get the kill.

I FINALLY snuck into a harbor and put 2 eels into a ship a few weeks ago.

I didn't hang out, escaped without incident, and got no credit.

Depends on harbour depth too
Some bigger units sit on the seafloor without passing the critical " sunk " line so never actually sink

Don't forget, hanging about could also put you in danger if they have radioed for help and it is relatively close at hand.

Also, If your settings are set to "realistic Sinking times" it can for sure take a while...

Once I was returning to base with only a single stern torpedo left. The weather had been horrid (15 mps for over a week) and I'd been out on patrol for almost four weeks and had had enough of the weather. I ran across a small freighter and, after several hours of maneuvering, got a clean shot at her.

Then followed the smoking, burning thing for three days while she was making no faster than 1 kt, hoping for the weather to calm so I could finish her off.

After three days, and without any warning, she just erupted into a fireball and sank, and I got the 'she's going down' message along with her being recorded as a kill.

Honestly though, after following her for two entire days, and admiring the dogged effort of her crew to stay afloat and reach home, I'd've come alongside and taken her survivors off (and making sure they brought whatever victuals they had; after four weeks, I sure as heck couldn't spare a sausage) and had them scuttle her. Then, once the weather had calmed (it does hafta calm at some point, no? ) I would have put them aboard their liferafts, made sure they were settled then radioed their position before heading off.

Wait 'til the Luftwaffe glamour boys steal a kill after you put an eel into her. <<Insert rude smilie here>>
