Default SH4 sound problem makes game pause or stutter

I have a strange problem that I just can't figure out. Sometimes, SH4 will crawl to almost a halt. The mouse becomes unresponsive and the screen jitters. It's not a video problem it's a problem somewhere in my sound system. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what to do?

Win7 Ultimate
8Gb RAM
AMD Athlon dual 6000
Nvidia GTS 250 1Gb
Asus Nvidia High Def onboard sound
Latest BIOS
C:\SH4 install directory
JSGME fewer radio contacts, ship dimension fix, torpedo 2x damage

Driving me nuts! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Some have said they'd had problems with stuttering when hardware acceleration was all the way up on the sound card, so try turning that down. Sound Control Panel->Advanced->Performance.
