Default It can blow at any seam. Give me your thoughts.

Wise people: give me your thoughts on tihis.

I was leaving Wilhelmshaven, January 1940, taking the usual path. Got about 20 km out. Full watch crew, doing 8 knots, at 1 TC, and suddenly I have dead folks everywhere and flooding in every compartment.

No explosions, no warnings, nothing out there. Clear skies, flat sea, little wind, 1300 or so in the afternoon.

I managed to turn the boat around, and we were pumping, but she sank about a minute later. All hands lost and I play dead is dead...so.

What gets me is that I was riding high and pretty, doing it by the book.

Drifting mine? Maybe, but why would that rip out my conn? Plane? How would it gut every compartment and we never saw it? And in Jan 1940?

Any ideas?

If you were anywhere near the West side of Helgoland, it was a mine. The British aerial dropped mines in that area.

If you were anywhere near the position in the picture below, the minefield on the eastern side is there until16th Dec 40 and the one on the western side is there until 12th Jan 40.

Hmm... I am pretty sure I was only 20 km out at open sea, but yeah maybe I was hugging too close to Helgoland.

I am starting to hate that map, Jimbuna.

Very interesting.
Glad I never hugged the coast there.
