Career Advice!

My current career in stock SHIII is getting into the point where the French bases and elsewhere will be opening up shortly, and I could use some pointers on how to go forward. My objective in the career is simple, namely that I want to accomplish a few things.

I had wanted to take someone's place among the Paukenschlag boats, but the first wave was all IXBs, if I remember right, and I'm not eager to get into those. Off-hand (i.e. uboat.net) it seems that at least one IXC went in the second wave, so I might want to be in Lorient with the 10th in an IXC by late January 1942, and then assign myself an appropriate quadrant and dawdle until the timelines synch, right?

I'm sort of interested in skipping things like Black May and the battle for ONS 5, so the South Atlantic may be good from mid-1942 until late 1943/early 1944, when I need to be headed towards Bergen in order to get a XXI.

I'd like to try out a VIIC/41 but it's not an absolute requirement.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Sink as much tonnage as you can so you get the renown that you will need to switch subs multiple times. As for the IXB they arent that bad I use to use one but i'm currently waiting to see if the new interior mod comes out for one.

You might want to download GWX3 as there are more historic events if I recall correctly. (Also more ships and many other good things)

When it comes to the French bases I have always liked operating out of St. Nazzarine with the 7th flotillia. It is close to just about every where there is likely to be targets worth the killing and it is easy to get into and out of the port there. Things get a little dicie in Biscay from about '42 onwards, what with all the air cover, but that will be the same for all the French ports realy; perhaps Lorent dosen't offer much truble there being as it is so far north you don't realy have to travle much of the bay to get to the Atlantic proper. The 7th out of Nazz also offers the VIIc/41 and 42 modles. I haven't used them myself, the stats on the VIIc and 41 seem very similar so I never botherd realy.

Agreed

Type VII boats did visit the eastern coastline (especially off Canada) in RL...you have replenishment options in the form of supply boats and milch cows to assist you if required in GWX3.0

Thanks for the suggestion of the 2nd at Lorient. We can wave to the Lion while sailing out to sea, and I'll be in position for Paukenschlag with a boat that can get there.

I was going to go for a VIIC, but I've found myself short on torpedoes more than once against a convoy, so I think BdU is going to want to put their "ace" in something with more than 14 torpedoes. This, especially since I've had a couple of short runners or questionable detonations lately; losing something like 25% or more of your torpedoes to reasons unknown really cuts down on the tonnage.

I appreciate the advice! Now I'll just need to figure out when to switch back from an IXC/40 to a VIIC/41 while waiting on my XXI to be built. Note to self: Smuggle a Los Angeles back and go from there.

Another option you may consider is to play multiple careers-each in a different flotilla.
That way, you get a variety of boats, areas to patrol, etc.
I currently have five careers going. When I get retired(via SH3Commander) or die , I move on to one of my other careers and cycle thru flotillas like that.

If you don't have it yet, get SH3Commander. It adds to the immersion and makes multiple careers a snap. You can change your assigned patrol grid as well with it.

Like people have said, get GWX or one of the other super mods. It is well worth it.
