Are patrol areas relevant??

What i'm asking here is if you are on a mission to seek and destroy battleships and are assigned a specific patrol area, are you likely to find those battleships in the area?? I know you don't have to go there but do you guys think its a good place to start looking??

I usually patrol the assigned area but most of times i don't find any ship...you have to be lucky to sink a ship in that area so you can get the "mission accomplished" message and get an extra renown.

Anyway i miss the Kriegsmarine grid. I still have to understand how big is the patrol area assigned....
