Default Could you see underwater with a real periscope?

In real life could you see underwater through a periscope like you can in game?

Yes, but not very far and only when the depth was moderate (Otherwise no light in the surroundings)

In game water visibility is always good. In real life it is not.

Well good I don't feel so bad about sneaking a peak and seeing how the depth charges are laying about me then.

I doubt you could see something that small at any distance. I don't recall reading that anyone ever used the periscope for underwater spotting.

I set my water fog (or whatever it's called) for '2', so I can barely see the end of the boat.

Yes, but not too far. Less than up to the bow. It depends on the plangton and the depth, the clarity in general, not so much from sea state.

Coupled with the fact that underwater its practically pitch black (even in daylight) with GWX,even close to the surface.I actually liked the thicker, murkier water in the stock game.Whats your take on this Steve, why the GWX developers opted for a black underwater environment?
My water transparency is set at 10,can just see past the bow,but not too far.I must admit,I sometimes like to peek above the boat at the waves to get an idea of the weather before surfacing.

In real life past 30m you wouldn't be able to raise the PS to begin with, the pressure is too high, it was not designed for use at such depth and even if you did somehow raise it you wouldn't be able to turn it for the same reason. Also you do not want to do any such thing. You want it to stay in its well safe and sound when deeper the 30m any other position will result in flooding. The deeper you are the more severe the flooding. (this is for you people that forget their scopes up after a submerged attack)

Maximum usable depth is maybe 25m and even then it will be hard to see and hard to turn it. Also when using PS do not exceed 5-6kts since in real life it would be bent backwards by the water resistance.

Down scope!

Of course there are safety interlocks for all the masts speed-depth depended, that can be overriden.

Where are you guys finding the water transparency setting? Or is it a Mod for SH3 that I dont have yet?

So far running GWX and a couple of others but nothing that would let me change the transparency of the ocean.

You need to download an add on pack called 'Commander' by J.Scones.
This will add extra career options to your game and also many other extras like being able to tweak water transparency, other options include being able to start your patrols already out to sea (by about 15km from port, not too far) instead of the boring crawl through your home port, and choose your own patrol grids (my favourite). This is a very popular addon and highly recommended.

Not sure if it is the latest version though, someone will correct me if its not.

Have fun!

Oh yeah
SH3 Commander. Don't leave port without it.

Don't forget to also get the GWX/Commander configuration files from the Grey Wolves website.
http://www.thegreywolves.com/downloads/

You be needing these if you plan to run Commander and GWX together.

That is indeed the most current version, however if you are going to run it with GWX3 you will also need to install the config files for the combination:

EDIT: Beat to the punch! Would've been faster if it hadn't been for those meddling kids and their dog.
