Default Radar and escorts

Do the escorts instantly react as soon as you are in radar range so no chance of a surface approach to get closer? Or is there some lag time?
Is their equipment always working?
Refering to GWX 3.

Thanks

Quite a few factors come into play....weather (sea and lighting conditions), the aspect/profile of your boat in relation the escorts, the efficiency level, distance etc.

I've managed to get to about 2.0km before being picked up by radar equipped escorts as well as being picked up at longer ranges too. Like jimbuna said, it depends on a lot of factors. It will definitely make you rethink your surface attack tactics against convoys.

I think profile will be the biggest factor against radar? maybe going decks awash may help IF you need to remain surfaced for any reason?
I think the safest bet would be to remain on their radar limit, not sure if this is between 15-30km?
