Former chess world champion and one of the true luminaries in the tradition of Russian chess, Vassily Smyslov, died early this weekend, age 89. His name leaves an eternal echo in the hall of names. Chess theory owes him much. The art of chess won both beauty and boldness by his visit. His matches stay.
In 1957 and 58 he ruled the game as the 7th world chess champion. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=6219

The door swings both ways. An old man leaves the stage, a young talent takes it by storm: Magnus Carlsson, chess grandmaster with 13 years, with 19 already top number one in the world and the youngest such rated player ever, claiming partial superiority even to the best rated player ever, Gary Kasparov - his mentor and trainer.

Just last week I introduced chess to my 11 year old daughter. She loves the game. I was talking of Smyslov and his explotes in the chess world with her. She loves the game and picked up the concept right away.
