Default CTD after saving a game

After saving my game during a patrol and loading it again the game crashes to desktop. I've heard that this might happen when saving underwater but when I saved Im sure the boat was on surface. Is this a common problem?

If you were just underwater, with no other business going on like too near an enemy or a sinking ship, it should not crash, at least for me.
You don't give much information about the complete circumstance as to what all was going on.
Were you playing stock or with one of the mega mods?

Examine your graphics card settings first

I seem to think having certain effects enabled through your graphics card can cause instability too.Previously I had Anisotropic Filtering enabled and was getting some CTDs,now I had an idea to disable it and use default settings allowing the game itself to render all the effects, and the game seems stable again.
It may be worth you checking your card's settings and enable 'use application settings' instead of forcing them

It happens to me occassionally. Personally I think the save game bug is fairly random in that I have saved in all types of situations including submerged and under attack and never had a problem, other times in the middle of nowhere with nothing else around and had a CTD on reload. Out of interest are you running the hi-res fix?

Sorry for the low amount of information I provided in my first post. I'm using GWX 3.0, some sound mods and the engine room mod.
I guess there is no way to fix this now and I have to load the patrol all over again.

I use it too and agree I couldn't return to SH3's native resolution. I just seem to have noticed that my occasional save game crashes happened post hi-res fix installation, whereas before it was rock solid. A coincidence perhaps, but I can live with it.

GWX is as stable a program as I have ever run for a game.
That being said, computers and games all crash at some time, no matter what we do.
Just keep a couple of saves in each patrol as insurance.
If you CTD on every save in that patrol then there is something else going on-hopefully not.
Good hunting!

The strange thing about the save game bug is that if you make a save but do not exit and reload to verify that that save works, then later save again under a different name then exit, if that first save was bad then the subsequent save will also be bad. In other words, you must verify each save works before making additional saves. I make one save and exit per gaming session, which in some instances gives me several saves per patrol. In this way each save I make is verified to work or not and should my last save not work I know my previous save will, thus not losing to much progress in a patrol.

...not near land - insight of land

...not near moving ships

...not underwater

...not near sinking ships.

this is what i stick to. i have found that when i do not stick to these rules i will get problems, usually ending with CTD's

You might as well overwrite the save under the same name.
One save per patrol. Problem minimizer.

Your suggestion is flawed I'm afraid. Your last save may have been good but if you overwrite that save with a bad one you are in trouble and have lost all progress for that patrol.

Unfortunately, it would seem that you are quite right.
I guess, "you pay your dues, and you take your chances", either way.
