Fed up with tweaking my nVidia 8800GTX

Ahoy mates

Now I've finally got completely fed up with my nVidia 8800GTX/ 768 Mb.
Seems like instead of playing I'm all the time trying to find the right tweaks with the nHancer.

Since the release of the SH5 I've been tweaking but not managed to get FPS higher than ~20 in the conn and ~45 on the bridge...

I'm not too good at hardware so I turn to you for advice.
(Right now I'm running a DELL Dimension 9200, all stock, 4 Mb RAM)
  • Anyone out there who has a clue how to improve this?
  • Or maybe instead of this:
  • Which Graphics Card should I get?
  • Should I get another mother board as well? (if it's possible to do in the DELL I've got)
  • BTW - It would be nice to be able to run XP 64 but this would mean I have to get a new motherboard or? Maybe I have to upgrade even more components?
  • Maybe I should consider getting a new rig? In that case - do you have any advice?
I''m grateful for all possible advice you can provide.

yea only 45 fps... that sucks

The best way to improve your performance would be to upgrade that card I'm afraid.

Your video card is going to be number one for this purpose. I went from two 8800GTSs to a single GTX280 and it's made a world of difference. I have a similar CPU too, and 8GB of ram.

I'm working on an upgrade for my own setup, though, as I've hit the limit of upgradeability, and you're probably in a similar spot with your motherboard. You can upgrade that video card and you'll be fine for a while longer, but the next time you run out of power for the next round of games, you'll need a new system. Just something to keep in mind.

Do as I , I just replaced my 8800GT with a 250GTS (fairly cheap around 120€, as a stop gap solution until a new PC comes to the house next year). Never had a better tweak in my life =)

At least a 285gtx, with a quality high power power supply like mine the Rosewill 950 extreme, that should take care of your problems keep in mind you really need to bump up that power supply to run these video cards, also show me some screenshots of you nhancer settings, "the global setting I do not touch the others - they may not be correct.

thats a bit overkill, I think a gtx260 core 216 would do you just fine, I currently have a 260 from xfx and I must say, one of the best decisions I ever made, had an 8800gts, went from hardly playing crysis on medium to running smoothly on very high. Also the 260 will give you the biggest bang for your buck, I did a lot of research before i got it and it has worked out great so far. But like he said, make sure your power supply can handle it, I have a 600 watt and it runs fine but Id probably be better of with more, but meh lol

Thanks for your quick replies mates

Now you've given me something to think about and for sure I'm gonna spend this Sunday comparing specs/ prices.

Hopefully I'll be updated enough by tomorrow to make my decision wether I should just try to upgrade or put together a whole new rig...

Again - Thanks/ vielen Dank/ merci beaucoup/ spasibo/ köszönöm szepen!

Greetings from Sweden

Previously had an 8800GT. The drivers had always seemed to be a bit screwy with a few games.

Recently built a new gaming machine and put a $180 ATI HD5770 1GB in it. I used to downright loathe ATI but so far I've been extremely impressed with it. And I saved a few dollars for similar performance from an Nvidia card.

Power supply is a vital component of a PC.
Probably the most important.

You can buy a simple case but you should get a very good power supply to make the PC run smoothly.

I use a Zallmann 1000 Watt power supply, heat-pipe cooled.
With a high-ratio of conversion and electronic components that
suppress any low frequency noise.

Never had any problems. Not when I was using dual 7900 GT SLI
cards or with a very power hungry 8800 GTX (she died of overheating
and was freely exchanged for a 9800GTX+)

According to http://superuser.com/questions/67464...-4gb-fully-eve, others have done it with Windows 7 64 bit. I'm guessing XP 64 should work too. Can anyone else confirm that? There's an upgrade advisor for Windows 7 that you can run first to see if you're ok. Perhaps there's one for XP 64 too, but I don't know.

Hi all,

I'm very grateful for all advice you've given so far.
Giving me a lot of good ideas for my planning of the config of my new rig.
I'll go on keeping my eyes open here so I won't miss any tips.

I hope I eventually will be ready to start building within ten days.

Best regards from Sweden

I have to agree with that 100%.

@opening poster
Your frame rights are about right for your rig and graphics card. I would suggest upgrading the graphics card for sure - there's only so much you can get out of nHancer unless you want to over-clock.

I brought a Sapphire Radeon HD4650 1024MB ($185) a month ago and what a godsend! This card is a beast compare to what i had before. Always been a nvida fan but since seeing this card work on a mates computer i went out and got one. Now me pc can render like it should, not like before it would stutter every 10 seconds when editing a vid in camtasia studio. Excellent gaming card as well.
