Default My First Official Patrol

After installing SH3 Commander and tweaking a few things (skip intro movies, which appear messed up for some reason, and No Fatigue, i know it reduces Realism, but still...) I ran GWX SH3 and set out on August 1st from Wilhelmshaven. Realism 80%
The first thought that occurred to me was if anyone here (or another forum?) has taken the time to map out all of the Depths of the Nordsee area? it varies from as shallow as 10 to 12 meters (NOT good) to a barely decent 40 to 50 meters (from what I've seen...could get a little deeper). If nobody has done this then I will be the first to volunteer a sub-region (say a 200km square just north of Wilhelmshaven, with the eastern edge of the square against the Jutland?) Anyway it was just a thought. If multiple players worked together we could have a Depth map of the North Atlantic and environs in a decent amount of time .
Summary of my little excursion to BF19. First thing I wanted to do was test how the game handles extreme depths. So the first dark spot on the ocean map I came across (a trench running southwest near BF grid, it's pretty distinctive on certain zooms) I headed for it. The depth of that trench was 1000 meters plus. YAY! Now I can REALLY dive lol. I set depth to 150 meters, well into Yellow zone. The usual hull whining noise. Then I set to 162m, right on the border of Yellow/Red zone. When I hit 160m, I heard a new kind of noise and my Officer informed me I was reaching a critical depth! I immediately gave the surface command. Deepest depth reached: 161m. I am satisfied.
Now for the bad news. I sunk a 5000 ton British Merchant ship, well, for being British...used 3 torpedoes on that sucker. Watched it sink all the way. Looked at my Log and it said it was Neutral? Then I remembered the War hasn't started yet! DoH! Well I could start over I guess lol.

In an undamaged VII you can use all the yellow zone without a problem.

Well, it has now.

BTW if you sink a non-enemy ship anyone else you encounter from that country will treat you as an enemy for (IIRC) 24 hours of game time, official declaration of war or not. So if you're still playing within that time window, beware the RN or any armed British merchants until your "enemy status" expires, lol.

If he's using historical availibility settings and sailing with the 2 U-Flotilla out of Wilhelmshaven in Aug 1939, it's most likely a VIIB. Commander won't give you a VIIC that early in that flotilla as far as I can tell unless you've opted for non-historical options or tweaked availibility dates somewhere.

How deep one can go (or not go) is very dependent on what mods are installed.

With an unmodded file you would quite probably be dead before reaching 220m.
