Default New Idea for Silent Hunter 5 and Beyond

I've been thinking maybe it's time to call a spade a spade (spade as in "shovel", just to keep things cool here).

Since every single Ubisoft Silent Hunter release to date has been a partially completed simulation requiring at least two patches just to get it nominal and a host of free mods provided by the community to get it up to something acceptable for a sub sim driver...why not approach Ubisoft with the idea of them developing the "core" of the sim and focus on that. Let us provide the correct models of ships, airplanes, weapons, environmental effects, etc. All Ubisoft needs to do is supply the processing logic and modification tools (with proper instructions) so we can make the sim what it was intended to be.

Think about it. They provide the framework for a full submarine simulation with no scripts or graphics files. All they need to focus on is does everything work at that level. We do the tedious stuff with the graphics, sounds, and mission/campaign scripts. This would unload a lot of the effort off Ubisoft to give them more time and freedom to produce a quality product.

I realize this would mean they would not need to produce anymore sub sims until the technology has changed enough to warrant it but if that logic were followed to conclusion, it would mean the company should never create a complete product or else risk its own obsoletion.

Some may say we are doing this already but I would say no, Ubisoft is still trying to produce a complete sub sim and there's a lot we could do that they really don't need to if we can both agree on it up front. Doing this would give them more time to spend fixing the things we would not have access to once the build is completed. Also, they have not done it in this way yet.

Anyway, it's a dream I have.

Do they really need ideas? This is a real question of mine.

I've played Eve online for over three years (and quit recently) and coming up with ideas was unavoidable.

I think it would be fun to discuss gamedesign. There are a few blogs out there that tries to put things into perspective.

Having said this, undoubtedly there is alot of work to designing a game. However, I suspect that the mechanics of larger games today, are set in stone for the next ten years prior to starting development. And this would suck (if you pardon my language) because if devs dont' need or want ideas, the thought of implementing new ideas as an afterthought must scare the most if not all of developers/publishers.

Take player death for instance. Huge problem in a decent MMO imo, unless it happens to suit a permadeath mechanics. Eve online has a genious way, that even hides the notion of player death, when you die, you are simply reincarnated into a clone a distance away. The last moment of life, is a machine scanning the brain and copying it, destroying it in the process, or so the lore say. Then the data is sent, magically to a predetermined cloning facility, and the memory is imprinted. And voila, you are up and running again, so to speak. I doubt that many players in Eve online are aware of this mechanics, as "player respawn", because it all make sense.
