Default I for one embrace the new UI Overlord

I dont understand why so many hate the UI.

After my initial shock when getting the game.. i've actually kinda warmed up to it. Sure its missing some things, and other parts could be improved or done alittle diffferently, but overall it just needs alittle love... not outright replacing with the previous one.

Old stuff should be worked in where and how it makes sense to do so, and in other cases **** should be dropped like its the plague. Yeah i know it's extremely early in the mod scene, and things will change.. but right now i feel like there's too much focus (& want) on bringing things back the way they were instead of how to bring them back in a better way (just generalizing here).

Granted, I was abit disapointed to see certain things missing when i first launched the game. But what's funny is that when i finally got them back through a mod... i found myself not even using em so i removed it. I realized i never really needed it as much as i thought i did, and can wait until there's a better design for it.

In the meantime, i have most of what i need hotkey'd to my liking.

I agree, it's actually quite elegant once you get used to it

Indeed, there are some issues like the TAI mini map popping up when it should stay minimised, and the stopwatch/clock disappearing when you drop back from 64+ TC, plus there are a number of missing features that really need to go back in, to save you running to your crew.

But otherwise it's quite functional. I haven't yet decided which type of UI I prefer overall, but I certainly don't dislike the default UI.

I haven't added any hotkey mods yet or made any adjustments myself, but I'm starting to miss a few things so won't be long now.

It took me a long while to get along with the UI, and I'm still not 100% accommodated with it, but I really like it as well provided that we get some extra commands and improvements for it in the following patches hopefully.

I have complaints about all the basic gui elements.

I will admit, when I got the game I was one of the first to come on here and start bitching about the UI.
After a weeks playing and careful reflection I now really like it. It suits the first person perspective of the game well.
It is missing some basic functionality, that is added back in by re-enabling some keystrokes.
I would ideally like to see the most important ones added to the UI in a non intrusive way that fits in with the look of the existing UI.

The idea behind the new UI is promising but it's implementation fails all over my shoes.

First, we've been through this, but it does absolutely nothing to convey the impression I'm anywhere near 1940. Digital readouts, flat grey dull 2D elements, in short the iPhone look.

Second, I dig the minimalist approach, I really do, but if you're going to do that, then at least let me have access to necessary functions like a compass, some way to fine-tune the deck gun aiming, etc.

And then don't waste the precious space by bombarding me with console-type nonsense like glowing orange mission indicators, indicators that I'm submerged (I know I'm underwater, dammit, I ordered the dive!) , etc..

In short, don't give me fully exploring interiors, beautiful atmospheric graphics, and then do everything possible to destroy the immersive environment with this new UI.

Of course, I'm talking about stock. Mods are currently rectifing much of this but it's going to be big job.

I like the new TDC implementation, but again - no way to control the spread angle in stock?

Hey I'll join this group as I too am happy so far. Yes there are elements with this UI that are kinda against the imersion that the stunning graphics do a stunning job of creating.
Yes, I agree I dont need an icon to tell me we are underwater, thats what my depth gauge is for.

So I spend most of the time with all this stuff turned off(shift=Z), in full screen and only truning it on when I need to, once I get what I need from it back off it goes. The only modifcation I've done so far is to add the "depth under keel" keystroke. That was something I couldnt live without.
To me IMO at this early stage modding can create problems that no one can forsee, so I'll be waiting out to see what the official patches will bring. And in time if then they dont do whats needed, then I'll start seriously putting in mods. And by then hopefully any problems they might cause will be worked out.

I actually prefer the new UI. The advantage of being able to plot enemy ships and alter TDC settings whilst at the periscope is great. Minor course changes can be set via the turn to where I'm looking command.

The only thing the new UI is really missing is the ability to return to course, but I'm sure this will be added at some point.

I think it would be a step backward if the UI returns to SH3 or 4. Maybe we could compromise and have the current setup with 'real' TDC controls down the left?

Its a shame that I am in the process of returning my copy. Not because of the game - which I actually like lots, but because the DRM prevents me from playing

Once i had put in the 3 dials mod from DarkWraith, and Church's keyboard maps that enable a return to course, the new UI has me happy as a pig in the mud.
