Default Virtuality overturns reality

Quote:
A married couple was recently apprehended by the police for causing the death of their baby daughter from negligence due to an Internet game addiction.
(...)
An autopsy by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation determined that the death was mainly caused by a "lengthy period of malnourishment."
(...)
The police found that the addicts spent their time at the PC room engaging in a role-playing game where they get to raise a female character. Players can buy clothes and accessories for the girl and keep parenting journals on blogs.
That leave one speechless, doesn't it!?

Indeed, I don't have much to say about this case. Someone once wisely said, "what is understood needs not be discussed."

However, there is another dimension that maybe should be explored. Moral depravity and hedonism certain is not something new to the digital age (not that you're suggesting such, Skybird). However, I do find it intriguing at how certain examples of it from across the globe can be readily accessed anywhere. I find it interesting that, with a burgeoning population and an increasingly pervasive media, stories like this remain by-and-large the exception.

So what does that say about the human culture? Are such instances decreasing in frequency despite being reported on more consistantly? Has our tolerance for such depravaties changed?

Righteous anger, I haz it.

You know, you get a bit older, you see what the world's like, and you just stop asking yourself, What is wrong with people?

But now I'm asking: WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?

I don't suppose it's much different, really, than neglecting a child to feed any other kind of addiction... at least as far as the outcome is concerned. But still, to do so in order to lavish "love" and attention on a simulation of a child instead?

As NeonSamurai said in another thread, we can make light of internet/gaming addiction, but when it's real it can and does have serious consequences. Well, here's a prime example - sadly the victim was in no position to defend herself against them.

I suppose the neglected child was just an irritating sideproduct of sexual intercourse.

A sad case of being too wraped up in their own world to accept another person into their lives.

What really pisses me off about this is the attitude of the "father" (a term used in its loosest interpretation)

Quote:
I wish that she hadn't got sick and that she will live well in heaven forever. And as the father, I am sorry," he said.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapc...ead/index.html

No, you worthless piece of crap sorry excuse for a man, your child did not get sick, you starved her to death!

I hate people.
