I am having the same issue as some others have had, including A6Intruder. I know this has been covered before, as I have performed the requisite forum search. In another thread, the remedy for the error was:

Did you upgrade your U-boat before starting your first patrol? If so, there's the problem.
Only solution is to manually edit your save game files to add in both the unrecorded renown and unrecorded date information - doable, but a PITA, especially for those not familiar with the files. Or study the "Known SH3 issues and workarounds" section of the GWX manual before starting a new career. |

To get around the problem, go on a shakedown patrol before you embark on a mission patrol. You can then fix your boat any way you want without incurring the dreaded "Invalid argument to date encode," and loosing your renown for any action.
