Default Manual targeting issues

Hi guys,

I've recently decided to step up to manual targeting but even though I have selected the manual targeting system and no wepaon officer assistence in the realism checklist, when I get a ship in my sights I have issues.

Firstly, when I bring either the UZO or periscope to bear on the target, my notepad automatically has the ship type locked (cargos at this stage is all I've come across) but it doesn't specify what type. Also, it has the angle on the bow locked in. When I then go to the ESB all I can see is military ships. I've cycled through several countries and never once seen a merchant vessel.

I assume this is what screws up the next step. Trying to range the vessel, its speed and AoB nothing will 'lock in'. Suffice to say I got the green-apple-splatters and just shot by eye, so far having sunk 11K for the use of 10 eels.

Any help figuring out why a) I can't target, b) the notepad automatically has basic ship type locked in with its AoB, c) why me ESB has no merchant shipping and d) Uncle Karl didn't give me a bloody medal for 11k shooting from the hip!

If it makes any difference, it's now 1 Dec. 1939, U-33 is a Typ-VIIB

TIA

As for the ESB, you have to click on the cover that says Handelsschiffe.

That is the merchant listing. The country listings are the military ships.

When you click on your Manual, click either left or right on the arrows, that should take you to "Handels schiffe" they're in there. You have to Id,then take range & speed calculations using the stadimeter & stopwatch, work out the angle on the bow and you should be away. I'm guessing "Onkel" doesn't give away medals for using 10 eels for 11k sunk because 10 eels would surely nearly weigh the same as the 11k in shipping

There are links to manual targetting here somewhere, took me a while to get it sorted, sorry if I am no good at explaining things,I just work by feel

The remedy for this is described on this subsim page: http://www.subsim.com/tips/tip_sh3.php

Look towards the bottom of the page for "How to Disable Auto Identify"

Cheers,
Benny

many thanks to all respondants! I've found the Handelsschiff section... the hard part now is accurately identifying those ships I stumble across

What I do is to keep Weapon Officer assistance enabled. That way, I try to id the ships I come across and let the WO confirm (or correct).
