As I started off with SHIII and haven't played either of the sequels I figured this was a reasonable place to ask this. In a fit of insanity (and at the time disgust at trying to get it to run on vista) I sold my copy of SHIII.

If you're even remotely tempted you should get SH3 again.
Factor in five years of community mods and development and you still have a great game which stands up well as both a simulation and a game today. Silent Hunter 3 with something like the GWX mod is the natural competition for Silent Hunter 5 and is the reason why everyone has such high expectations of the new game. Unfortunately it is also the reason why a lot of people might be disappointed with SH5 - all the work people have put into making mods, additional content and improving the historical accuracy of SH3 is honestly more than any retail game can expect to live up to at present. Let's face it though, there is nothing stopping you getting both - SH5 for the eye candy and SH3 for the realism. ![]()

These days you can buy a copy of SH3 that is fully patched and Starforce-free (disc doesn't have to be in the drive to play), and for very cheap.
Then you can also buy SH4 for a low price, and experience the best of both worlds. SH4 also has many great mods available. And SH5 is looking like it might end up being the best ever - all that modability and fantastic graphics.

I suggest getting this version of SH3, since it lacks Starforce protection, also it's pre-patched. Also, I suggest GWX Gold.

If we're going to talk about add-ons, don't forget SH3 Commander. It's a vital addition to any supermod.

I agree, the price now on SH3 is too good to pass up, plus it's already been patched and had the DRM removed, plus you can download about a zillion cool mods for free that are probably worth more in added enjoyment than what the game by itself cost when it first came out.
