Default How would a Romeo stack up with a Type VII or IX?

I was just fiddling around in DW and noticed how very loud the Romeo class submarine is. I picked it up on both broadband and narrowband before I got tones on a Grisha V doing 8 kts (no platforms were cavitating) about the same distance away. That's got to be one LOUD boat!

So I'm curious, since I play Silent Hunter as well, is the Romeo louder than the uboats the Germans were using in WW2 or about the same?

Umm I'm no expert but I don't think Romeo class submarines were noisier than German 2nd world war submarines. The Romeo was built in 1950s and the Soviet developed the design after having learned the German revolutionary Type XXI so I believe Romeo must be even better than German type XXI boat.

Grisha V corvettes were built between 1985 to 1994 so about 4 decades after the Romeos were built. So it's safe to assume that Grisha V would be quieter than a Romeo SSK at least for certain speed range.

I would also like to point out to you what or which sub or surface ship that you played when detecting the Romeo. It's not fair to deem the sub very noisy when you are playing a Los Angeles class submarine for example. The latter was developed much later with much improved sonar suite and quietening measures.

Being a silent hunter 3 gamer I hope you will fall in love with DW too. Check the DWX mod if you are interested in having more playables and numerous improvements to the sim. DW is not SH3 but I like both in equal measure.

Definitely! DW is a great sim!

What are the older anti-sub ships in the game? (I use the most recent LWAMI mod)

I think there's none which is playable as old as the Romeo.

The only playable ship in stock is the Olive Hazard Perry class FFG and DWX adds the Russian Udaloy class to that list.

Well there's Kotlin, Kildin, Kanin and Kruppny for the Soviet side in DWX. These were built starting in 1950s.

As for the US, there's the Knox DDG/FFG. This was built in the early 1960s.

Romeo's were obsolete when being built, noisey small and just not very good, the ideal would have been the coast defence not really a long range boat (thats where foxtrots came in), to put it bluntly the soviets took a step backwards with the romeo despite having no deck gun and all that they were as noisey if not noiser than the type VII U boats of the war.

Today romeos still see some sort of active service, china maintaining about 12 of its origional 33 boat class (improved version) and 8 remain in the egyptian navy, and to be honest the egyptian romeos dont look like they have done much in the last decade (i saw 6 of the 8 in 2004 in a right state).

Romeo's came in two forms the standard romeo and romeo improved, the improvements were mainly mechanical batteries and engines, all chinese and egyptian boats are of improved kind the chines labeling them 033 ming class, the chinese boats differ some what they have some chinese parts in them as well.

So all in all one rushed boat design no good just about does what its built for, the foxtrots the long range veriants of the same time were much better boats, and the tango's which ultimately replaced boat foxtrots and romeos and also the whiskeys were even better and the follow on kilo better still.
