AMERICA’S recent history has been a relentless tilt to the West—of people, ideas, commerce and even political power. California and Texas, the nation’s two biggest states, are the twin poles of the West, but very different ones. For most of the 20th century the home of Silicon Valley and Hollywood has been the brainier, sexier, trendier of the two: its suburbs and freeways, its fads and foibles, its marvellous miscegenation have spread around the world. Texas, once a part of the Confederacy, has trailed behind: its cliché has been a conservative Christian in cowboy boots, much like a certain recent president. But twins can change places. Is that happening now?

Now immigration is likely to reconvert Texas from Republican red to Democratic blue; Latinos may justly demand a bigger, more “Californian” state to educate them and provide them with decent health care.

I must have missed the class when they taught that. I thought it was Alaska and Texas. California is #3, no?

I don't disagree, but until I see you libs display a little of the outrage you have for the treatment of the homosexual community towards the treatment of, say, woman in Islamic countries, its hard to take you seriously.

Besides - gays have equal rights. What they want are special rights. I won't bother with them until they admit it.

It will be interesting to see how that plays out. The border counties are already blue, but the holdouts especially amongst the rural counties will cause friction.



I suppose if immigrants spread north it will have an effect, but if they remain concentrated along the border, it will be a purple Texas.

Yes it is clearly stated at least in the current draft of the Healthcare bill that illegal ailens would be covered. Ms. Pelosi insisted on it.

Let me help....

During consideration of the health care reform bill (H.R. 3200), the House Ways & Means Committee rejected an amendment that would have helped ensure illegal aliens would not receive taxpayer-funded health care benefits.
The amendment, offered by Rep. Dean Heller (R-NV), would have required the government to verify that enrollees in the "public plan" and applicants for "affordability credits" are not illegal aliens.

Ok, but where does it say Pelosi insisted that illegal aliens be covered? Where did she specifically say "I want illegal aliens to be covered by this health bill. I insist."

I'm not seeing it. I see that someone urged her to do it, but I don't see where she said "I insist." If you're going to criticize something, that's fine. But making up stuff about it doesn't add anything to the debate.
