I got stung by a jellyfish near tokyo bay this summer. i got a permanent scar from it right round my left leg - at least the scar is still there now and not looking like it's going away.

never saw what it was though. probably a much smaller version of that fella, or maybe just a stray tentacle.

When I was a young man I used to surf alot.

I had this terrible fitting wetsuit about 2 sizes to big for me.

The 'shirt' had this huge gap at the neck/chest where water would wash in when ducking a wave.

One day I was ducking a wave when the wave washed a freakin man of war down inside my wetsuit.

It was horrible and literally nearly killed me, I was about 1/8 mile offshore, couldent breath, and going into shock.

I ripped off the wetsuit (and let it float away) dove for the bottom and scrubbed with sand. That helped a little... at least I could breath now. I paddled into shore where some guys whom were prepaired and had bottles of amonia on them and poured it on the wound.

I still have scars to this day but unles youve been stung on the nipples by a man of war you dont know what a real sting is

HA! I have something to beat that jellyfish!

Last year... during the summer, I went to the beach just to look into the water and see nothing but a sea of jelly fish... Jellyfish washed up on the beach, in the water... I didnt try to get in the water that day.

While jellyfish years and invasions are not new, and the giant Japanese jellyfish isn'T new as well, naval biologists point out a trend in the oceans that salinity, temperature, ph-level and such are shifting towards value the global ocean has seen at the times before fishes became dominant species in the seas - but jellyfish were. It is a phenomenon that since several years in many different variations has become truly global. Exotic, danegrous jellyfish species that were locked in ecotic waters, enter nordic waters as well that before were cosnidered too cold, and more and mor eoften they could blossom in population iszes much the same way like algas do, and then they bring local fishes to the brink of rigonal exticntion. This problem is growing both in frequency and number of locations. the dfangeorus thing here is that every local ecosystem has a trehshold level beyond which local fish populations cannot recover from being hunted and wiped put - either from man or jellyfish. Like the numbers of local water areas around the globe that are labelled as "dead sea" for all live and oxycgene has disappeared in the past 15 years have increased by a factor of around 20, there is also a global spreading of jellyfish populations, which means both growth in population sizes, and moving of species into before unavailable waters.

Some biologists consider it to be the beginning of a maritime doomsday scenario.

Good old Skybird. Always full of good news.

I remember there was a time when there was a jellyfish invasion out near Long Island. The beaches were closed because of it. Now, me and my friend decided to go out in a boat and go fishing. My friend didn't know about the jellyfish. So... we're out there, I stand up to move to a new seat and my friend starts screwing around. He rocks the boat and my clumsy ass fell overboard, right into a massive cloud of the slimy bastards. Of course I didn't have a shirt on and I was wearing shorts so they were ALL OVER ME ! I can't even describe the pain. ! And they stick to you like freakin' glue. Once I got in the boat, we were scraping them off me for quite some time. It took a nice hospital visit and a LOT of painkillers to get me through that.

I also used to drop crab traps off the docks near my grandfather's boat when he'd work on it. I pulled up a trap once and there was a nice sized blue crab in there. I went to grab him, and I didn't realize that the thing was standing on top of a jellyfish that had also come up with the trap. I got stung by the jellyfish, panicked, and because I wasn't watching, the damn crab whirled around and latched onto my hand as I jerked it back. I freaked and swung the crab repeatedly, banging it against a post till it let go and flew back into the water. My hand still has the scars from that one.

I hate Jellyfish.

I got zapped by a Jellyfish when I was kid - We were at a place called Streaky Bay on the west coast of South Australia ,visiting some friends when we went to the town "Swimming pool" , basically a big arc mesh enclosure on the side of the jetty to keep the sharks out!(If you google earth Streaky Bay you can see it on the side of the jetty).
Problem was , the cage doesn't keep other stuff out and there was large numbers of Jellyfish around - I'd just jumped in and was swimming back to the ladder when I felt this really bad pain in my leg , got out of the water and there was this dirty big tentacle from one of them on my leg , when my old man tried to pull it of ,it took a big line of skin and some meat with it ,ended up with a scar on my leg that's still clearly visible after 30+ years

Heh.... funny boys..

Another amusing story is about the american tourist that got stung while swimming in Mexico.

The woman was hollering... oh my what a squalor... when a couple of young boys came running...

"My wife shes been stung by a jellyfish !" the harried husband lamented.

The boys exchanged a bit of chatter in espanol the turned pulled down their zippers and began to pee upon the stricken tourist.

See the above post about amonia

ps; WTF is kali?

i've been reading that the effectiveness of urine is a myth.

Apparently it's the acidity in ammonia that works, and if your urine is so acidic it can kill the jellyfish stinging cells, perhaps you need a hospital for another reason.

i think plain old vinegar is the standard treatment now. it is in oz, where real aussie men like to slap themselves with a box jellyfish in the morning just to help wake up.
