Some Advice Please Ending Missions

I have just started a German campain, got to my destination, launched the life boat, but the mission didn't seem to want to end.
I ended up getting out, it said mission complete, but status was failed, as I opted out.
When is the mission supposed to end ? am I supposed to end up back in the briefing room ?

Unless I'm misreading you, I think the problem is that you did not return to port?
