TMO is designed to be played with map contacts on and still not give you too much information, that is info that would not be available to the captain of a sub. There are no friend/foe/neutral colors, ship silhouettes, explicit text descriptions for unidentified targets or escorts, etc. One piece of info that IS available which couldn't be modified is that visual positions are still plotted perfectly.
I just willfully ignore visual positions, taking ranges and plotting them myself. Radar positions, by the way, would actually be MORE accurate than your nav map position because of the binning created by pixel location. If you want to play with map contacts off just for the challenge of it, fine, but TMO is more historically accurate with them left on.
