Since reinstalling SHIII after reformatting my computer a few months ago, SHIII has crashed much more often than before. Unfortunately it seems to crash at random places and times.
I am running: GWX 3.0 SH3 Commander GWX - 16km Atmosphere GWX - Axis Mediterranean Aircraft skins GWX - Integrated Orders GWX - Late War Sensors Snorkel Antennas GWX - Merged Campaign GWX - VIIC41 Player Sub GWX - Alternative Flotillas Widescreen_SH3_V1 DSBM (dasbootsoundmod) Plus some music files I replaced. On a nVidia 8600GTS driver version 190.62 in Vista32 I've always started Careers in 1939 as the flotilla from Willhelmshaven. The follow has been repeated at least 3 times in the latest crash reports from windows, so something is specifically wrong but I don't know what: Code:
Product Silent Hunter III Problem Stopped working Date 9/11/2009 8:22 PM Status Report Sent Problem signature Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: sh3.exe Application Version: 1.4.0.1 Application Timestamp: 00000000 Fault Module Name: Sound.act Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 42ae9983 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00006c13 OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 71b2 Additional Information 2: d67447db3d751ecbf60cd906060deaa4 Additional Information 3: 7a25 Additional Information 4: 48652f378e7f3e13e5f640531da3151d Extra information about the problem Bucket ID: 295254809 Edit: I have been informed that such things could be the result of driver problems. Does anyone know of a nVidia driver that is most compatible with SHIII? |

The error report says something about 'Sound.act' being the problem which given that you replaced some sound files could be why. I suggest you remove the music you added/replaced and also de-activate the DBSM and try playing without them. No crash? Ok, now activate DBSM and try again and if you still don't crash it is probably the music files you added.
If however it crashes even without any sound modifications I would deactivate all mods and try adding them one by one and testing. Long process I know but the alternative is a complete reinstall. You saying you replaced some music files rings alarm bells for me given the error report. Good luck.

I agree with what Damo wrote; Sound.act is a file in the SHIII folder; perhaps it is bad. You might also try replacing this file from a fresh install. There was a mod sometime ago that replaced this file but I don't remember which one it was.

Disabled Das Boot Sound Mod in JSCME, apparently that solved the issue. I didn't play for more than 10 min but that is longer than it has lasted before. (I sailed all the way around england and back) We'll see how it goes in a few days worth of playing.
Thanks for your help guys. |
