Make sure your copy of the game isn't already patched to v1.4.

Look at the lower right corner of the main menu to see what version of the game you have.

Later copies of the game are already patched. If you try to patch a patched game, you'll get weird error messages.

Also, there is an info file in the SHIII directory with the version number.

v1.4 is the latest.

Also make sure you have the patch for the right region (US vs. EU/Asia/MiddleEast) and installation type (downloaded vs. DVD game) combination.

It shouldn't matter. Patch 1.3 isn't available, and there was a problem with 1.4 saying 1.3 instead. You should be okay as long as it says anything but 1.0.
