Default Fresh Install Problem

Hello Mates!

I recently decided to get back into SHIII and use the GWX3.0 Supermod. Following the instructions with GWX3.0, I uninstalled SHIII, deleted the relevant folders, and re-installed SHIII from my original DVD. I then installed patch 1.4b, then GWX3.0. When I try to start SHIII, I get a Protection System error. It asks me to put the DVD disk into another drive and try again (I have two DVD drives). I do that and cannot get past the error.

I know this is not a GWX3.0 or SUBSIM problem, but I thought someone here may know something about this problem. Any suggestions?

One thing I did not is that in patching to 1.4b, even though the file name indicates us dvd version 1.4b, the installation program reports that it is updateing from 1.0 to 1.3. Is this just a reporting error, or did I have the wrong patch?

Thank you for any suggestions.

Robert

Correct. It's just a typo. You did indeed apply the 1.4b patch.

nah, it is only the file name or caption that is fcked up. You got the right patch. Hmmm-dunno-if it says insert DVD the easiest way is to....insert original dvd. In case you don't have one you should use sth that starts from "c", "a" in the middle and "k" at the end. 5 letters easy riddle but Neal would probably kick our asses for talking about it.

Kranz,

Thanks for the tip. I do have the original dvd disc, and I did try it in another drive, but no luck. The program was working fine before I uninstalled it to prepare for GWX3.0, but now it won't work after the re-install. Very strange.

Starforce Protection error.

You won't like this.

1) Uninstall everything.
2) Use the Starforce Removal Tool
3) Use a free registry cleaner - CC Cleaner
4) Reboot.
5) Start Installation + Patch and GWX 3.0 again.

Additionally, if you are using a 64bit Vista OS, there are incompatibilities with Starforce. The only way around this limitation is to find a way for the game to run with NO CD in the drive. *ahem*

My work is done.

danlisa,

Thanks. I tried the steps you suggested but I still get the Protection Error screen. As I said, the sim worked fine until I uninstalled. I don't get it. This is very frustrating. Maybe I'll try purchasing SHIII again via download (it's only $9.95). Is there any reason to believe a fresh start with the download version (instead of my original DVD) would work? I really want to play with GWX3.0, but with a $10 donation to download it from SUBSIM and another $10 to re-purchase it, plus the half day I have already lost trying to get it to work, it's beginning to look like a losing cause.

While I'm sure Neal appreciates any and every donation to Subsim, GWX 3.0 is available for download other places for free:

Mookie,

Yeah, I know. I could have downloaded it for free, but I don't mind supporting a web site as helpful and responsive as SUBSIM.

Neal thanks you for your donation.

As for DL SH3, save your money. Your disc version works fine, all that is happening is a file conflict left over from the previous install. Basically the registry files from your previous SH3 install are conflicting with the new SH3 install. GWX has nothing to do with this.

Following an uninstall using windows add/remove, insert the disc and also choose uninstall. Then manually check the C:\Program Files for any residual SH3 folder, also check My Documents for the SH3 folder, delete it. Reboot. Then run a Registry Clean, removing anything UBI or SH3 related (caution if you have other UBI titles). Reboot. Run the Starforce Removal Tool. Reboot.

Now, reinstall SH3 and Patch to 1.4b. DO NOT START the game, remove disc from drive. At this point follow the instructions in your PM.

Back here again, good.

Reboot and try the game using the shortcut from your desktop. If the game works, proceed to install GWX 3.0, using all the core files (1 x exe and 7 x bin files).

Return her eis you have any problems with the GWX installation.

Because that's not the version available through Subsim.

Hello mate!

Well actually, I give everybody on subsim.com (GWX players) your FileFront page. You don't get removed by FileFront because of your popularity.
