depending on how late in the war we are talking about...
...avoid convoys, task force groups and single warships entirely. at the slightest hint of radar signals go deep and quiet. at the first indication of aircraft crash dive to at least 50 m avoid shallow water (water less than 180m deep) at ALL COSTS target only single merchants or merchants in unescorted groups of 3 or less - there are not very many after 44 at this point in the game, the war is over for you, you have done all you can, the fight is now in the hands of the ground forces scattered across Europe. be conservative, take no chances, stay submerged through the day, hunt at night. and most importantly never hang out more ass cheek than you care to have shot off

You can attack convoys late in the war, just have to be extremely careful. I'm currently in March 1945, DiD (since early 1943) and constantly attacking convoys and task forces, with mixed results.
![]() Invest your renown wisely. Defensive equipment is key to survival. Get yourself RWR, antisonar and antiradar coatings, and bolds. Having a good boat, that can go deep will keep you alive. I'm on VIIC/42, and she can go realy deep. ![]() Don't attack escorted ships if you can't go at least 300m deep. If your hull is damaged, return to base. As soon as you receive a radar warning, dive. No need to crash dive, you'll have enough time if you have a decent RWR. If you have the snorkel, instal GWX Late war sensors, wich puts a RWR on top of it. Without it, the snorkel will get you killed in no time. Most of the torpedoes I take are old T1 steamers. Attacking a convoy in '45 with anything else is suicide. Their long range will hopefully give you enough time to escape. My usual attacking distance is 7-8km. With a bit practice, you can achieve more than 50% hits. Knowing a speed and course from radio report is very helpfull, because it's difficult to get TDC data from that distance. And keeping a periscope up for too long is not healthy, especialy if convoy has air cover. Having the most advanced bolds is a must. The early ones are effective for only a few minutes, and are useless late in the war. Later models last 10-12 min, maybe even more. You have 10 aboard and use them wisely. When you're detected go deep, flank speed. Choose your escape course and release 4-5 bolds to make a sort of a curtain, perpendicular to that course. After you do that, continue on that course, slow and silent. THe bolds saved my boat many times. After you spend them, stay away from convoys. To sumarize ![]() - have a good boat, well equipped, that can go deep - don't attack in shallow waters (for me, thats <300m) - attack from extreme distance, using steam torpedoes Your tonnage will not be as in 1940, but at least you'll survive. Using this tactic, I just attack a convoy and sunk Casablanca escort carrier and large tanker. Of course, it doesn't always work. On my last patrol I was detected minutes before launching torpedoes, and barely got away. I limped to base with 68% HI.

Remember Herr Kaluen..greed kills..just ask me, I havent survived the war yet.
My last career was close though, Oct 44.. but the Titanic and Queen Mary suckered me in and the Hedgehogs finished me off. ![]()

In 1944 and 1945 you can attack convoys, task forces and even hunter killer groups when weather conditions are extremely bad: poor visibility, heavy rain, winds 15, and waves like mountains. Something like a hurricane.
Of course you have to learn how to attack in that conditions. |

Stealth is your friend. Go deep, stay silent and only hunt at night.
Other than that head down to Rio and spend get your boat interred and wait until 1946. ![]() |
