LAG.. too many ships on the bottom??
Recently I have been goofing around.. I found a "sweet spot" for VonDos's SS Normandie and USS West Point as well as GWX standard 24k ton Troop Ship. As kind of a joke between me and a friend I have been trying to see how many times I can sink them each and whats the highest tonnage I can achieve.
I am wondering if in the shallow area I am in (200m-300m) is not deep enough for the behemoth VD ships to despawn? I am getting a tremendous amount of lag. (normally I experience zero lag)With 4 Normandies and 4 West points on the bottom under my boat, even when reloading a save in the same spot. Alot of lag at first then it slowly goes away. It actually caused instability and CTD so I had to end my last patrol with a paultry 457k tons. ![]() Anyways just curious about the whole despawning sunken ships thing..

This phenomena is really strange Mike because the ships should disappear after sinking in anything above 50/60 metres of water.
I remember writing a single mission 'Operation Deadlight' and my initial attempt for photographic purposes was scripted in 40 metres of water......the U-boats remained fully rendered after sinking as I intended. I later moved the U-boats into 50/60 metres and they disappeared after sinking. I'm just wondering if the rendering process is dictated by the depth of water above your boat and not simply the sea bed ![]() |

Possible they are pointing straight up? And the ship doesnt completely go passed the bye bye depth?
I have sank ships and they actually show up on the map as a contact even though they are just a stern or bow sticking out of the water. ![]()

Have you noticed that ships listed as sunk (ie: you get the "she's going down" message, the ship stops moving or firing and you get the credit in your sunk list) but which don't actually sink below the waves, ( ie: they sit uselessly semi-submerged on the surface) are re-rendered after going out of sight, as new ships on their original course and speed?
This happened so regularly to me on a mission i treated them as different ships to save scripting new ones in to the mission. Favourites for this tendency not to actually sink, are the Battlecruisers and Battleships, but it applies to any ship that doesn't disappear below the waves, probably by at least 50m as you say Jim. It also applies to ships not sunk, but left dead in the water through engine trouble/severe damage ( the old German heavy cruiser problem). Same thing with the Graf Zeppelin, that would get more than 25km away, then loop back on her course so i could meet up with her again. When she re-appeared, any damage previously incurred by her, or her escort, was gone, they were obviously re-generated as brand new ships, and annoyingly, in different formation. Only cure was not to let them get more than 25km away. Hanomag, are you more than 25km away when they show up as contacts again, or still cose by? It seems that some, but not all, of the conditions for being sunk are met by the game engine, so they are either not unrendered, or are re-rendered once beyond about 25km from the u-boat. You may find it's re-rendered as a new ship, continuing on it's original course and speed.
If it hasn't been unrendered (doesn't disappear from the game either above or below the waves), some time after you lose visual range of it, it'll probably re-appear, sailing along merrily. You could always sink it again ![]() |

Part of the problem may be the Submerged drought settings?
Those are in the sim file. Crash depth may also play a part at times. Why does a surface unit need a crash depth of 300 meters? ![]() So you can follow it down I guess. But any ship sinking is rendered until it hits the crash depth. I've followed them down to the vanishing point. Sink any ship in shallow waters and you can watch them hit bottom. Go beyound render range they will vanish. But if you don't go beyound render range? They will stay on the bottom because they have not passed crash depth. |

Who can follow them down? Maybe in the days of Stock SH3. But with the eliteness of GWX..hah. What you guys do? Set the games water opaqueness to Loch Ness? Even with SH3Commander set to swimming pool I cant see a bloody thing below like 50 meters?
![]() Oh and BTW Privateer that definitely solved the mystery. I wasnt sure at what depth they despawned. But that would explain it. The spot where I was experiencing everything was not deeper than 300m. ![]() I knew all dem big ol fat VonDos ships on the bottom were the cause of my lag...but I couldnt see them. ![]()

It is a pain to follow them down.
You must stay right on them in the murk! I call it Hanomag water. ![]() It's dark, creepy, and a PITA!! ![]() Just kidding my friend. ![]() But the crash depths are way to high for surface units. They should be lowered to 60 meters or so for all units. Who in his right mind follows every unit down? (Do not answer that!) ![]() |
