Guys, I am getting ready to install this game again to encourage my little 4 man LAN/COMP group to play a bit. What mods would you suggest right off the bat?
And a couple questions please: As I remember, this has Co-OP MP. Is that still the case? Is the MP code stable? Can a few guys sit down and play a mission in an hour or so? Or Less? I dug out the printout of the manual I had from a few years back. I now remember how daunting it looked and why I never played the game. Is it possible to start playing on a beginner level and then turn up the difficulty? Or is this game just plain meant for a 2" thick manual. Thanks, GLB |

Hello,
I can't answer your question about the MOD's because i have little experience with them. The game supports multistation multiplayer up to 4 players in the same sub: - control - sensors - weapons - TMA The game is stable in multiplayer, or at least it was not an issue to me. I would say that the minimum game length (with exchange of torpedoes) is around 20-30 minutes, given the (insufficent) distance at the start. If you have experience with Sub Command you will need relatively little training to play at a noob level, but that applies for the subs only of course. If you don't have experience with Sub Command you will need to practice some hours in order to understand the game mechanics. My hint is to not open the book unless your learning process is stuck. Further, I encourage you to post your "problems" in here (if any). The people here will usually go much farther than the book and maybe add valuable hints/tricks. For me personally the frigate was the most difficult unit to man (never managed at present ![]() The first problem you might encounter is to open the requested ports on your firewall/router (if any). ![]()

As for the mods, well that depends on your preferences. The LwAmi Mod is a good one for starters, but in the long run you might want to experience with the RA or AT mod because they add "new" playables.
As for gettin into the game in the first place ... try the DW Wiki and the CADC at www.commanders-academy.com there as well as at www.subguru.com you will find usefull information and downloads. A good starting point is the "Landlubbers Guide" ... read that and then go on from there. If you encounter problems along the road, come back here or at the CADC and ask your questions. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I remember now why I uninstalled it the first time. There is no beginners tutorial. I looked at the first several tutorial on the second CD. They are way too complicated for a beginner. I also read the information you suggested. Same deal.
"get in the helo and learn it because its the easiest platform" is not a beginner tutorial. When I started to fly FS9 I remember getting a one page tutorial on ILS landings. It said, click this, look for this, click that, look for that. see this, see that. After repeating that several times I understood how to make it work. I didnt need to know how the ILS worked in real life, I needed to know how to operate the sim. After being able to push the right buttons, I could operate the game and then later I learend what an ILS is. I have found nothing like that here or anywhere.. I appreciate your suggestions but that's what your community is missing. IMO. A simple line by line, click by click, "how to" operate the sim. If you can refer me to one I'd be happy to give it a go. About all I have done is turn the ship and launch a torpedo. I mean I understand the concept of using sensors for detection, I just dont know how to use them in the game. Thanks, Gary B. Hi Kimchoc DW is not that complicated. The most complicated platform being the FFG. But all others pretty much operate with the same procedures.
Remember DW is not a hardcore study sim by which it doesn't simulate down to the button details. DW is an experience sim. That is to say that DW mimics and simulates the experience of operating various naval platform systems. An experience sim is always less complicated than a study sim. Both maybe technical but an experience sim gives you plenty shortcuts while a study sim doesn't. All you need to do to learn DW is to watch the videos given or to look for Sub command tutorial. Good luck to you ![]()

As a starting point, play the MH-60 Demo mission which can be found both in the Demo and the Full game. The walkthrough for that one can be found here http://www.commanders-academy.com/wi..._Demo_Tutorial . Aside from the walkthrough, the manual might be helpful for any detail issues or stuff you dont know right off the bat.
Work through this mission to get a feeling for how the game works. After you played this mission once or twice you might want to check the Kilo Tutorial here http://www.commanders-academy.com/wi..._Demo_Tutorial and do that. Based on your experiences you made with these two missions get back to the landlubbers guide and the various resources and look ask for the next steps. |

Hey, that was the trick. That tutorial was just what I needed to get going. I had to turn on truth one time due to frustration. I would travel south, drop the hyrdophone and plot a target to the south. Then when i got near, I drop the hydro again only to find that the exact same plot was way to the north. I have no explanation for this. I know i chased that same plot at least 4 times back and forth from north to south. They were not close, just at complete opposite ends of the battle area. Maybe this was a bug, I dont know. Finally I just launched a torp along the path and it hit the target within a few miles, surprisingly not where the target showed up on the hydrograph plot thinghy. Nothing ever marked at that location.
Anyway, tks for this link. It will keep me going.. ![]() GLB |

Another good training mission for the subs with great reading is molon's ASW TRAINING (play the mission while reading the mission guide text found in the same folder after unzipping.
You can probably find it on the SUBGURU site. |
