Well, like the title says, what brand would you recommend? To simplify it a little, let's only consider brands that build their own units.
Reliability is key; if it takes a little longer, you just wait a little longer. If it keeps mangling discs, it costs you money, so reliability over speed. Labeling is not important, just as easy to just write on the disc.

If you started to get into copyprotection and duplication of copyprotection, then things change. Otherwise, go with what is cheap. BTW, when it comes right down to it, there are only a few actual manufacturers and everyone else just re-brands the DVD's manufactured by these few. Sometimes the only way to know what brand you have is to scan it with your burner. An example is Maxell - I had two of the same stacks but the stacks were made by different manufacturers regardless the same exact label. Same thing has happened to me with TDK. -S |

I have had Pioneer DVD burners (12x) in 2 machines, have upgraded both machines, but still the same burners, now around 3 years old & a few hundred burns with only a few duds, very happy.

Well, let's narrow it down further to LG, Samsung or Sony Optiarc. DVD RW drives are cheap as dirt, can get the newest Sony, without labeling, for E20,-.
AD-7240S seems like a pretty solid drive.
