Details of Loss
While approaching the Bay of Biscay returning from his patrol position SSW of the Azores, U-853 was attacked by USN carrier-based aircraft and suffered engine and rudder damage. Several hours later, the boat was detected by a hunter-killer group of the Royal Canadian Navy. After taking severe damage, U-853 was forced to the surface and surrendered.
