I will be very surprised if he gets reelected on 12 June.

I am hoping that Mousavi gets elected. I would have preferred Khatami but he withdrew supping Mousavi.

Read about the potatoe-incident, this bit from Dan Quayle's Wiki-entry had me laughing.

Quote:
Quayle was at one point during his Vice-Presidency accused by the John Birch Society of secretly being a communist agent working to "further the aims and objectives of the International Communist Conspiracy direct from the White House" and of "taking orders directly from the same individuals from whom the Kremlin take theirs". The Birch Society further claimed that Quayle's bumbling persona was a carefully contrived act on his part to minimize suspicion and that in reality Quayle possessed a "formidable intellect and cunning". Although the Birch Society claimed to have "hard evidence" to back up these claims, they never made any such evidence public. Ironically, Quayle's parents had once been members of the John Birch Society themselves.

In the 19th century the spellings of potato and potatoe were both recognized. However in the 20th century the spelling of potato was adopted exclusively.

What is interesting is that the spelling of the plural was not changed.

One potato, two potatos?
One potatoe, two potatoes?

No, it is one potato, two potatoes.

There is no requirement for the English language to make sense.

Quite correct

Here is a breakdown of the vitamins in a potato(e).

Thiamine (Vit. B1)
Riboflavin (Vit. B2)
Niacin (Vit. B3)
Vitamin B6
Vitamin C
Calcium
Iron
Magnesium
Phosphorus
Potassium
Sodium

Lots of B's and C's but no E's

I think it's all those extra vowels that cost the British their empire!

Maybe you can explain to me how a word spelled "idea" can be pronounced with an "r" at the end?

Maybe we took some of them extra vowels and consonants from the British and just stuck them on the end of random words?

That has always bothered me. There are some highly educated people who speak like that.

I don't hear that particular pronunciation unless someone is trying to be cute.
