Okay first I have a couple questions, Are there British Submarines in this game?
On my first mission with the 1st fleet in 1940 I got 32 tons of cargo and got around 400 renown, then the next mission I got 38 tons of cargo and only like 220 renown. Both of these they were from convoys and were cargo ships. Anyone know why the difference? What does everyone get as far as renown goes? Also this is just a story, I am cruising at about 15 knots when my crew spots a trawler and they got like 5 shots and they had run out of both HE and AP ammo for the 8.8 cm deck gun and so I was mad that that I had this perfectly easy target and I couldn't sink the stupid thing, so I manually shoot the gun and I tried using Starbursts and it actually worked. I have never seen any submarine besides mine on stock Silent Hunter III, although you may find them if you use mods like GWX.
About renown, as far as i know each ship gives always the same amount (so if you sink 2 C2 Cargo and 2 Small Merchants one patrol and you sink the same on the next you should get the same renown). Be carefull what you shoot at, cos if you sink a neutral, you´ll get negative renown. About that story...damage model on stock SH3 is just too simple.

GWX 3 adds computer controlled enemy subs to the game. They act like surface ships however.
Renown is based on the type of ship sunk, not it's tonnage. The formula used is (ship's renown value) X (realism percent). Renown values for the ships in the GWX mod can be found here. It sounds like you are using the stock game with no mods. There are no British subs in the stock game, however as Mookie Mookie has pointed out, GWX 3.0 gives you British AI subs albeit they stay on the surface due.
