Default Hull strength on A/C's

Can anyone advise on how to strengthen the hulls on the Aircraft Carriers?

Through a couple of recent posts and research, the resistance of most of the WW2 carriers to attack is well documented, but with the exception of VonDos's brilliant RN CV Glorious, most of the carriers drop like flies when attacked.

Privateer has already kindly helped me fix a little problem with the German heavy cruisers, and based on his advice there i've tried strengthening the engine rooms, ammo and fuel bunker areas on the carriers. But it hasn't worked.

A single hit from a heavy cruiser shell ( along with a couple from her smaller guns) sunk the Graf Zeppelin immediately, and the Illustrious/Essex class is no better. The weakness seems to be in the hull.

I don't want to start pm'ing modellers because i know they're almost always busy on new projects for our benefit.

Hence this general post to anyone willing to volunteer the info needed.

Have you tried adjusting hit points and armor levels? These are found in:

data\Sea\[Unit]\[Unitname.zon]. Open the zon file in S3ditor and scroll towards the bottom; you should see a section labled "CollisionableObject" with the data you need to increase armor and hitpoints.

Hi iambecomelife,
no i haven't, i didn't look in that section.
Because i've never tried altering ships before, i was going by the "type" numbers info given to me by privateer, which appear to refer to settings in the zones.cfg file in SH3/Data/Sea

I didn't want to touch those in case i altered the settings for EVERY ship with those "type" numbers.
Thanks dude, i'll try your suggestion, it looks like it could be exactly what i need

Btw, i altered

7=AmmoBunkersAbove to 186=BBAmmoBunkersAbove
156=NFlotUpper to 109=FlotabilityUpper
157=NEngineRoom to 189=BBEngineRoom

Changing the engine room settings for the German heavy cruisers from

157=NEngineRoom to 162=NEEngineRoom

seems to have fixed their tendency to stop whenever fired upon, but since it didn't appear to strengthen the Graf Zeppelin, what effect do those things control on the ships?
Are the "types" less important to the strength of various zones than the number of hit points in the .zon file for individual ships that you described above?

The last question above might seem a bit daft, but in the zones.cfg file the "type" numbers have hitpoint values assigned to them.

Obviously there was a bit more to it than that.

Just played with the armour levels in collisionable objects section, and it works

Left the hitpoint number alone (550) but doubled the armour level from 35 to 70, and the Graf Zep and the Devonshire sunk each other, with a much more sustained fight lasting 5 mins or so.

I now also understand why VonDos's Glorious is so tough.

A bit more fine tuning and i should be happy with all my carriers.

Many thanks iambecomelife.
