o7 Fellow Kaluens!
I am new to the forums, not new to SH3, but new to GWX. What a shock was I in for when my former command happened upon that 44 000 ton troop ship (can't recall name) in the med, sinking her (she was doing 5kts and was lying stern down due to a storm) and then I get blown into kingdom come by some very angry super destroyers. I was shocked... what the heck was this GWX mod thing with these h4x0r dessies? ::whimper:: Alas after a few weeks of learning the new benchmark in single missions and studying these boards, I am now a taking a serious bash at it. This also gave me exposure to all the greats mods available, of which I was not aware. What a pleasure it is to be so immersed, thanks to such a community contribution to a great game. SH3 Cmdr is brilliant and little things such as lifeboats, torpedo damage and gramophone tracks are wonderful. Then there's GWX of course... Right... onward. So now that I am confident that I can handle the new AI, I started a new career with SH3 CMDR. I decided I wanted a career, from start to finish, see if I can last the war. I humbly introduce Walter Sumberg. First couple of patrols were okay'ish... not too bad tonnage. Terrible shooting, thanks to me using manual targeting for the first time in a campaign. I would like to share Walter's latest patrol. Freakish weather encoutered, and by freakish I mean Unlimited Visibility (btw 16km horizon is fantastic!) and 1m/s winds from my departure (01-07-40) 'till my return to base. I couldn't believe my luck! On my previous 4 patrols, the second I rounded the Orkney's, visibility would drop down to 400m with 15m/s winds, so you can understand my surprise. Naturally by the time I rounded the orkneys again, my 8.8cm shells were expended. (I figured I'd cash in, save torps, while the weather was good and before them tommies finally start growing larger teeth.) I sank a few small merchants, a large cargo and large merchant. I then plotted a course to get me north of Ireland, to wait for possible convoys. When I reached AM35, WO called out warship spotted and I ducked under. Sticking my scope up, I could barely make them out. (16km horizon ![]() Due to the premature impact my 2nd pair of fish were not as effective. The HMS Bulolo performed evasive manuevers and manage to shake one fish. Luckily a fish struck her at the stern, wrecking one of her shafts and causing major flooding. She started listing immedietly. By this time I was performing my own little dance from the excouring DD, that never got a sniff of me. It was perfect. After sending them to the bottom I continued and found a merchant convoy north of Ireland. In the convoy, a Southampton class! I was ecstatic. I know its not a capital ship, but it was my first time seeing big'ish warships in campaign. I put one fish on her bow, and she dove in the deep. I was DC'd for quite some time before the hunters finally gave up. Here's my log from the patrol. Grid AN 16 Ship sunk! M/V Sea Skimmer (Large Cargo), 8576 tons Grid AN 16 Ship sunk! S.S. Naeco (Empire-type Freighter), 6780 tons Grid AN 16 Ship sunk! M/V Randfontien (Medium Cargo), 5081 tons Grid AN 14 Ship sunk! S.S. Koll (Coastal Freighter), 1869 tons Grid AN 14 Ship sunk! S.S. Contocook (Passenger/Cargo), 2253 tons Grid AN 13 Ship sunk! M/V Reliable (Pelagic Trawler), 888 tons Grid AN 13 Ship sunk! S.S. Devis (Large Merchant), 10615 tons Grid AM 35 Ship sunk! HMS Esperance Bay (Auxiliary Cruiser), 13850 tons Grid AM 35 Ship sunk! HMS Bulolo (Auxiliary Cruiser), 13850 tons Grid AM 54 Ship sunk! HMS Gloucester (Southampton class), 10725 tons Grid AM 54 Ship sunk! S.S. Morning Light (Large Merchant), 10616 tons Patrol results Crew losses: 0 Ships sunk: 11 Aircraft destroyed: 0 Patrol tonnage: 85103 tons (Unfortunately 3 of my fish failed to detonate. 2 On a Large Merchant, then another on a 2nd Large merchant. Pity, could have hit 100k. C'est la vie...) |

Glad to be joining the ranks.
![]() I understand GWX scripts many historic TF actions, so I will be venturing to Narvik come April '40 and maybe even see if I can catch some action in the the Denmark Strait, provided I have the time, eels and fuel to last till May. I did my last 5 patrols not going higher than TCx128 and TCx64 when patrolling an area. I must say it is quite a difference. I wasn't aware of how 512+ affected game play. |

Sounds like your birthday and Christmas rolled into one.
Last time I was in the Orkneys, I got run down by a task force. Never even had time to ID what hit me ... let it suffice to say I was looking UP when I saw it.
