Noob question: External views

Greetings!

I'm back with another noob question. I've installed SHIII/GWX 3.0/SH3Gen/JSGME/SH3 Commander. I've been working my way through the tutorials and the Naval Academy...I must say this is quite a difference from back when I was playing Aces of the Deep

Anyway, how does one get to good external views of the boat? I've used the icon on the bottom of the vertical row on the left side of the screen and tried panning around with the keyboard & mouse, but I can never get a decent view of the boat. It's either all water or sky, or a distant view of the stern.

I did try searching the forum for an answer to this, but I got a gazillion hits, so please bear with me
