May 1940, North of Scotland, U-104 attack a coastal convoy with 14 cargo ships in 2 columns, protected by 4 DDs. U-104, laying 600 meter from the starboard-side column, evaded detection by the lead escort. U-104 fired 2 electric torpedoes (TYPE II) at the 2 ships on the far column first, then fired 2 gas torpedoes (TYPE I) at 2 ships in the nearer column. With good calculation (and lucky guess work), all four torpedoes hit their unsuspecting targets within the same minute. On top of that, U-104 slip away undetected from 4 very angry destroyers in 120 meter shallow water area.
Unfortunately, of the four ships hit, only the 1900 ton tramp steamer and the 2100 ton small merchant went down, for a grand total of 4000GRT. Which will relegated this perfectly executed attack to a historical footnote. KAPITÄNLEUTNANT ZINN, U-104 GWX3.0, 100% |
